Often we hear criticism and problems coming from all camps, but real politics and change is brought about when organisations put their energy behind the solutions to such generally accepted problems. Well done to all those advocating for solutions that can truly lead to a more sustainable agricultural sector that protects the livelihoods of farmers while ensuring better and sufficient food for all.

Agri-food systems in Central Eastern Europe (CEE) are key to achieving the EU climate goals. Our new webinar series will explore how agroecology (including organic farming) and sustainable food consumption can enable a transition to climate friendly and resilient agri-food systems in CEE, while also addressing the biodiversity crisis and the economic crisis in agriculture. In each webinar we will illustrate and exchange views on different elements of a transition to climate friendly and resilient agri-food systems based on agroecology. We will explore alternative pathways, models and lessons learned from existing initiatives. We will offer insights from research and practical examples, as well as have time for exchange and networking among the participants. The answer may lie in technological innovations. A promising example is Globalfac, developed by HTS BIO Laboratories. This biotechnological treatment has proven its ability to reduce ammonia emissions related to manure storage by 80%, a significant advancement that aligns perfectly with the global goal of reducing nitrogen emissions by 50% by 2050. This type of innovation offers a concrete solution for farmers facing environmental challenges, while ensuring the continuity of their essential role in local food supply. The case of Dutch farmers, like Wim Brouwer, illustrates the need for solutions that respect both ecological and economic imperatives. By adopting products like Globalfac, we can help farms integrate sustainably into their environment. Today we celebrate World Environment Day! Let's use this opportunity to discuss the issue of pesticide use in agriculture. Pesticides harm human health, wildlife, and the environment, urging a move towards sustainable food production. However, we must consider farmers, many of whom operate on thin margins. Abruptly ending pesticide use could harm productivity and raise food prices. It's not about farmers versus consumers but finding shared solutions for both people and biodiversity. Techniques like cover cropping can improve soil quality and reduce pesticide use. Regulatory reforms and scientific advancements in pest-resistant crops are also crucial. Collaboration among farmers, consumers, retailers, and governments is key to sustainable pesticide management. “In a new report titled RECIPE FOR A LIVING PLANET the World Bank recommends that high-income countries should shift subsidies away from animal agriculture and towards more sustainable alternatives.” “High-income countries have the highest per capita agrifood emissions, and the report advises that they should “decrease consumer demand for emissions-intensive, animal-source foods”. This could involve increasing the cost of animal foods to reflect their environmental and health impacts, along with shifting subsidies to lower-emission foods and promoting more sustainable alternatives.” We are 5% of the worlds population and 25% of GHG’s - we have a moral obligation to be big part of the solution. 🍃🌎💚
