This collaboration aims to strengthen regional value chains and enhance sustainability in Baden-Württemberg’s fibre industry. 🌱 Eco-Friendly Shift The NaturalFIBER BW project is committed to transitioning from a fossil-based economy to a green economy, focusing on the cultivation of natural fibres like hemp, flax, and nettle to support regional biodiversity and local economic growth. 🌍 Sermag's projects and collaborations for a sustainable future 🌍 Projects and collaborations: LCA Study with the Proplast consortium: In 2024, Sermag will conduct a Life Cycle Assessment study on its recycled materials, in collaboration with the Proplast Consortium. Design of a deodorisation plant: Together with ITALREC srl, Sermag developed a plant to reduce odour in recycled materials, improving mechanical and environmental properties. Collaboration with Mottin Srl and the University of Eastern Piedmont: Study of a methodology to measure the deodorisation of plastic materials, with patent application pending. The future of recycled plastic: Increasing use of Post-Consumer Recycled Materials: PCR materials are increasingly in demand for high quality products such as benches, chairs and secondary packaging. Solutions for materials with excellent mechanical and aesthetic properties: improved by adding virgin materials and additives, while maintaining high quality standards. As part of the Horizon EU Green-Loop, Guala Closures in Breganze, Italy, is developing bio-based bottle closures to replace traditional plastic. This innovative project, led by Guala Closures and Le terre di zoè Organic Farm, is achieving positive results in research and production. Their initial focus on sustainable food packaging caps shows promise for 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀 while maintaining essential qualities like strength, hygiene, and versatility. Horizon EU Green-Loop aims to bolster the European bioeconomy by designing products for new, sustainable, and circular systems. Sustainability is something i often think about in my line of work. Balancing between budgets, lifespan of exhibition, reusability, environmental impact and preferences, the decisions are never clear cut or easy. At Expology - Making Experience Matter, we continually develop and adjust our strategy to make sustainability a key point in our deliveries. From using recycled plastics, environmentally friendly wood such as Valchromat, removable panels for content for futureproofing such as content renewal, to using local suppliers when possible, we are constantly on the lookout for ways to be better. So for ECSITE this year, we printed a small batch of businesscards on Scandia 2000 - one of the world’s most climate friendly paper - at the recommendation from Konsis. Its a great product where Lessebo Paper AB have taken into account the entire product’s cradle to grave carbon footprint and actively offsets it. These are the products we need more of and at price points accessible to typical budgets. It was great to see PlantSea at the Innovate UK stand at Packaging Innovations & Empack. See below their latest innovation... Anglesey-based PlantSea, established in 2020 by three Aberystwyth University PhD students, is tackling the problem of plastic pollution through innovative bioplastics derived from seaweed, supported by funding and expertise from the Welsh Government’s EU-funded SMART Innovation programme. Their mission is to combat the environmental harm caused by petroleum-based plastics with sustainable and biodegradable alternatives, aiming to become leaders in seaweed-derived plastic production. Their research focuses on creating low-carbon biomaterials for various applications, including agricultural mulch film, potentially tapping into a mass market. SMART Innovation’s guidance has been instrumental in their development process, aiding in design, manufacturing, and intellectual property aspects. With plans to further expand their product range and collaborations, PlantSea delivers the key principles of innovation, biodegradability, circular economy, and sustainability, addressing the urgent need for plastic reduction while supporting carbon capture through seaweed aquaculture.
