Today is indeed a sad and harsh reminder for us in Aotearoa that all is not well! Infact, there has been much harm, abuse, neglect and trauma, which has been evident for the past few years but nothing across the systems seems to have changed to prevent further trauma harm and abuse.
The systemic trauma continues and marginalised communities continue to be left unseen, unheard and undervalued!
While there is acknowledgement of the pervasive & systemic trauma, harm, abuse and neglect in the report; and a clear indication about the need for trauma informed approaches across education, health, justice and social services sectors to respond appropriately to and support those affected by trauma, there is no clear focus on proactively embedding trauma informed approaches across sectors to ensure systems, processes and the workforce are inclusive, holistic, equitable and prevent trauma from happening in the first place.
To be responsive is not adequate! We must be proactive and embed preventative measures.
This is why, a thorough understanding of neuroscience and trauma informed approaches can help shift mindsets to ensure educators and others across health, justice and social services sectors are inclusive supportive and appropriately responsive to all children and individuals, no matter their individual needs, abilities, disabilities, disadvantages or experiences of trauma. Only then can our next generation thrive with wellbeing, rather than survive with trauma that gets generationally transmitted.
The question remains .... Will the politicians set aside their own personal priviledged views and perspectives aside, and work collectively to commit to prevention of trauma and abuse in the future so that our tamariki and rangatahi can thrive without the threat of discrimination, neglect, abuse, inappropriate supports, inequity, and marginalisation???
