WasteDive published a great piece on the federal Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies lead by producers who formed the Circular Action Alliance, my client that is leading Colorado's industry-led EPR program implementation. This is exciting work and an exciting time to be working on recycling, not only as an environmental necessity, but an economic driver as we move to circular economies. https://lnkd.in/g2F3bBVE

Tomorrow is voting day. The European Parliament’s Committee on Environment will vote on its amendments to the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR). It's crucial that MEPs support measures that are realistic and pragmatic. ➡️ When it comes to #reuse and #refill, we ask MEPs to reject the CA10 on the reuse targets as this does not respect the complementarity between reuse and #recycling. ➡️ Exemption mechanisms are critical to ensure the complementarity of reuse and recycling, support the achievement of our sector’s climate objectives and make sure operators are only obliged to invest in reuse when it actually makes more sense than single-use from an environmental perspective. 🔎 Read this opinion article in POLITICO Europe by our Director General Nicholas Hodac 👇 https://lnkd.in/ep5Z9vrM Frédérique Ries Delara Burkhardt Pietro Fiocchi Grace O'Sullivan #ClosingTheLoop #CircularEconomy #EUGreenDeal

#PATHnews - The U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works subcommittee recently held a hearing led by Senator Jeff Merkley to discuss the potential benefits and challenges of implementing a national bottle bill. This discussion highlighted the complexity of harmonizing state-level recycling programs with a federal system. Representatives from the Container Recycling Institute and the Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative shared their perspectives on balancing state and national interests. The debate centered on environmental benefits, the supply of recycled materials, and the need for a nuanced approach that respects regional differences in recycling infrastructure. The session underscored the ongoing legislative efforts and varying viewpoints on managing plastic pollution and enhancing recycling rates across the U.S. #refillit #recycling #beverageindustry

U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, today joined the Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Environmental Justice, and Regulatory Oversight, for a hearing to examine solutions for reducing single-use waste. ON THE NEED TO EXPLORE REUSE AND REFILL TO IMPROVE #CIRCULARITY AND REDUCE #WASTE: Chairman Carper: “I believe that achieving circularity in our economy hinges upon our taking an all-of-the-above approach to addressing our consumption and waste management practices, and I am inspired by the role that reuse and refill infrastructure can play in that transition … Why is it important to consider policy options beyond just recycling as we work to create circularity within our economy?” https://lnkd.in/eAm8J-Tr

We voiced our support following Senate passage of the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act (RCAA) and the Recycling Infrastructure Accessibility Act (RIAA), as we believe the standardization of data collected at materials recovery facilities and the ability to provide accurate and verifiable reports to the appropriate regulatory authorities is a critical step in creating a mechanism to improve the purity of the recycling stream in the United States. https://lnkd.in/eXstsH24

ISRI submitted comments on the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Draft National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution, which focuses on actions to reduce, reuse, collect, and capture plastic. In its comments, ISRI provided several recommendations that will help achieve circularity for plastics while at the same time reducing pollution in the environment. “Plastics are an extremely diverse, resourceful group of materials used in our daily lives. Given the complexity of the recycling system, and plastics in particular, there simply is no one single answer to the challenges facing plastics materials management in the United States. We applaud EPA for a proposed strategy that recognizes there are many solutions that, taken together, can make a significant difference in keeping plastic out of the environment and instead, circulate these valuable material resources into the manufacturing supply chain. We welcome the opportunity to further collaborate with the Agency and others to advance this proposed strategy.” - ISRI President, Robin Wiener Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gHv-6jEr

Exploring the realms of a circular economy, the concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is gaining traction, holding producers accountable for the end-of-life disposal of their products 🌍 It's a thought-provoking eco-initiative, translating into responsibility for the full lifespan of packaging! The Packaging and Packaging waste regulation (PPWR) in Europe embodies this principle, pioneering sustainable production and consumption patterns. Big opportunities exist: our global economy is only 7% circular ! (source: circularity gap report 2023) Nice article from my colleague Pauline de Vilmorin (Bouquart) #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #EPR #PPWR
♻️ While EU figures show a 6% increase in waste generation in a year time (2020-2021), the latest debates observed during the European Parliament's plenary vote for Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR) show indecision between prevention and recycling as the top priority action to reduce the environmental impact of packaging. 👉 By setting the right framework to for preventing waste, improving collection and recycling rates, eco-designing and testing re-use systems, the Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) concept can help companies to put ambition into action !
