Register today for the 2024 MassRecycle Conference being held March 19! https://buff.ly/3vuuz7k Rosanna DelRosario, Recycling Coordinator for the City of Lawrence, will share when Lawrence decided to implement changes, they learned the most effective way to outreach their linguistically diverse community was in-person interaction. Outreach was done with visual aids and videos in Spanish, through contamination checks and leaving notices on the bins with a phone number so residents had to contact the recycling coordinator directly. Requests for extra trash containers were met with recycling bins; explaining specifically to landlords that offering more space for trash will not reduce the amount of trash produced. This was all accomplished with a unified effort: haulers, drivers, inspectors and outreach coordinators all worked as an education and enforcement team. Join us at RU to learn from Zoe about "Building California's Circular Economy." A circular economy for all materials is California’s roadmap to a zero-waste future. California is driving policy and implementing reforms to reduce waste and expand recycling and remanufacturing infrastructure across the state. More about: Zoe Heller was appointed CalRecycle’s Deputy Director of the Division of the Circular Economy in May 2023, after serving as the department’s Deputy Director of Materials Management and Local Assistance, and Assistant Director for Policy Development. Before joining CalRecycle in 2017, Ms. Heller worked at the U.S. EPA’s Pacific Southwest Office for more than 10 years, including management of the Zero Waste section, and in other roles. From 2004 to 2006, Ms. Heller was a research and policy analyst at the Center for Neighborhood Technology in Chicago, Illinois. Ms. Heller holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Policy from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, and a Master of Public Administration from Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois. City of Austin, State of Texas, adopted a new plan last week to renew efforts to help the city achieve its goal of zero waste by 2040. Austin first adopted the goal, which envisions diverting 90% of trash from landfills by 2040, in its comprehensive plan in 2011. The city has grown rapidly since that time while also building out a more comprehensive system for addressing waste. Austin’s population grew by more than 20% over the last decade, according to the plan. Meanwhile, extreme weather events like 2021’s Winter Storm Uri have exposed cracks in the resilience of the city and state’s infrastructure.
