Defra has announced that the implementation of mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain will come into effect on 12 February 2024. This new regulation requires that any planning application submitted on or after 12 February for sites above the small sites threshold (sites with 10 or more dwellings, or sites over 0.5 ha) and not otherwise exempt must legally deliver a 10% Biodiversity Net Gain, as part of the government's effort to generate positive outcomes for nature. The implementation date for small sites has been set for 2 April 2024. Further details and guidance on this, Natural England's Site Register, and the commercial sale of Biodiversity Net Gain Units are anticipated in the following weeks and months. *Enhancement is key* ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ With the weather finally showing its potential and the sun shining, we began some reptile receptor site enhancement today. The goal is to aerate the soil and spread tussocky grassland seed mixture to improve reptile suitability. Tomorrow, we will be constructing log piles to further enhance the receptor site. What's the latest in Biodiversity Net Gain? With BNG now mandatory for major developments in England, Senior Ecologist Katie Smith at Ecus Ltd outlines the terminology, tools, metrics and guidance developers should be aware of, in her latest blog 🌱 As a developer you must demonstrate exactly how a proposed development will achieve the biodiversity gain objective of at least 10%. BNG update - as of May, Gov have released the ‘suggested paragraphs for biodiversity gain information on the written decision notice.’ A useful reference point when considering what condition wording should look like for developments where a Biodiversity Gain plan will be needed, won’t be needed and in situations (eg small outline schemes) where it’s not known if a BG plan will be needed.
