NAHJ Career Center New Job Senior Writer, Policy, The Verge: New York, New York Vox Media WHO WE ARE The Verge is an ambitious multimedia effort founded in 2011 to examine how technology will change life in the future for a massive mainstream audience. The Verge is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible. As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships. The Verge's policy team is dedicated to illuminating how politics, law, and regulation affect the technologies that shape readers' lives — and how technology is shaping all those fields as well. As a US presidential election approaches, the Supreme Court prepares to take on online speech challenges, and EU regulation changes the basic operating principles of services like iMessage, we're delving into the goals of politicians, regulators, and activists; weighing the intended and unintended consequences of their efforts; and looking for the nuance behind the biggest issues of the day. WHAT YOU’LL DO The Verge is looking for a senior reporter to cover the policy and politics of technology, including the 2024 US elections and beyond. You’ll spend your days finding big stories and breaking down enormously complex topics around technology lawmaking and more. Senior reporters at The Verge are responsible for working with editors to identify and maintain a beat, then proactively generating stories on that beat. As tech policy reporter, your duties will be a mix of reporting on the news of the day and digging into longer-lead investigations that will drive news cycles of their own. Your responsibilities will include: * Developing your beat with coverage from news to larger reports and analysis. * Working across our teams to find and explain stories around tech policy. * Develop and nourish sources in the communities being affected by tech policy and with the companies and activists working for better tech policy. * Proactively pitch news and analysis, and help vet stories. * Help us maintain our collaborative and ambitious team culture. WHO YOU ARE You care deeply about politics and policy because of what they mean for people. You have a vision for strong, focused election coverage that doesn’t just report what candidates are telling voters, but presses them for the answers that matter — on topics ranging from online speech to the future of the FCC to the right to repair.… See more jobs at www.nahjcareers.org #MoreLatinosinNews

#FactsAndFigures! In my view, whether it's print, radio or television or whether it's in Singapore or not, intergenerational tensions occur in newsrooms. There is a digital divide/digital barrier among young and old journos in newsrooms which affect day-to-day operations. True enough, lack of communication and digitalisation is the source of tensions between young and older journalists at work. "Meanwhile, younger journalists emphasised that journalism is very different now compared to what it was 20 years ago: it has to be seen in the light of reporters now facing a 24/7 news cycle."
A new project by our Journalist Fellow Sheo Be Ho looks at intergenerational tensions in newsrooms, focusing on Singapore. Sheo Be Ho's paper is inspired by her own experience as a senior member of her newsroom at Singapore's Chinese language daily, Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报, and based on a questionnaire distributed to both young and older journalists at five Singaporean newspapers. https://lnkd.in/dVh62YWP

Should Newsrooms Panic as Journalists Flee Social Media Platforms? Journalists are increasingly disconnecting from social media platforms due to burnout, online abuse, and concerns about privacy and authenticity. Valérie Bélair-Gagnon suggests that this disconnection reflects a "joy of missing out" , prioritizing self-care over constant digital engagement. Neglecting these considerations could impact recruitment and retention, particularly with the rising Gen Z workforce prioritizing work-life balance and personal boundaries. However, news organizations should consider the implications. Journalists often feel unsupported by their employers in managing the pressures of online activity and may resort to individual coping mechanisms. Bélair-Gagnon recommends a shift towards collective discussions and inclusive policies to address broader issues like workload and safety, not limited to social media. #Journalist #Journalisme #Journalism #Newsroom #SocialMedia #AuthenticityOverEngagement #MediaBurnout #SelfCare #Boundaries

🚀 The new publishers rights regulation 🚀 Indonesia is taking bold steps to reshape the digital ecosystem with the recent introduction of Presidential Regulation No. 32 of 2024. This groundbreaking regulation is set to ensure that digital platforms play a constructive role in the dissemination and commercialization of news content, aligning with the principles of quality journalism and the laws governing the press. Key Highlights of the Regulation: 1️⃣ Responsibility in Content: Digital platforms are now required to prevent the facilitation and commercialization of news content that contravenes press laws, acting promptly on relevant reports received. 2️⃣ Support for Press Companies: A concerted effort must be made to facilitate and prioritize the commercialization of news from Press Companies, ensuring their content receives the visibility it deserves. Press companies is defined as news companies that have been verified by Press Council (Dewan Pers) 3️⃣ Equality and Fairness: The regulation mandates equal treatment for all Press Companies, promoting a fair and balanced digital news landscape. 4️⃣ Investment in Quality Journalism: Digital platforms are encouraged to conduct training and events aimed at bolstering the standards of journalism, reflecting a commitment to nurturing talent and enhancing content quality. 5️⃣ Innovative Algorithms: There's a push for the development of algorithms that champion quality journalism, reflecting democratic values, diversity (kebhinekaan), and adherence to legal frameworks. 6️⃣ Collaborative Efforts: The regulation fosters cooperation between digital platforms and Press Companies through agreements that could include compensations in the form of paid licenses, revenue sharing, data sharing on news users, and other mutually beneficial arrangements. Disputes arising under this new framework can be referred to a Committee established by the Press Council, ensuring a structured approach to conflict resolution. Let's observe how this new regulation unfolds in practice and assess its impact on digital platforms, press companies, and the broader field of journalism. #DigitalMedia #QualityJournalism #PressRegulation #Innovation #Collaboration #Indonesia

Fixers need more credit. Here is why. In the realm of global journalism, the figure of the "fixer" is indispensable yet often overlooked. Fixers are local journalists who assist international reporters by providing a myriad of essential services such as translation, cultural interpretation, logistical support, security assistance, and editorial guidance. Their deep knowledge of the local landscape enables foreign journalists to navigate unfamiliar terrains, secure necessary permissions, and gain access to pivotal locations and individuals. Despite their integral role, fixers frequently remain uncredited, highlighting a significant disparity within global media practices. These professionals are not only logistical supporters but also cultural and linguistic bridges, offering insights that enrich reporting. They take on varied responsibilities, from managing safety concerns to providing editorial feedback, embodying a versatility that is crucial to the success of international reporting endeavors. The relationship between fixers and international journalists underscores a complex interplay of power dynamics, with fixers often navigating the challenges of unequal opportunities and risks. Their work is a testament to their agency and commitment to journalism, even as they face potential safety risks without the protections afforded to their international counterparts. Acknowledging the vital contributions of fixers is not just about giving credit where it's due; it's about fostering more equitable practices in journalism worldwide. As we move forward, it's imperative that the global media community reflects on and adopts best practices that honor and safeguard the rights and well-being of fixers, ensuring a more balanced and just field of global reporting. #journalism #news #journalist #media #reporter #press #broadcasting #newsanchor #fixer #freelance #management #leadership #culture #startups #journorequest #Helpareporter
