Shining light on a carbon nitride thin film generates net charge. By adsorbing ionic surfactants, directs chemical gradients - measured with droplet manipulation. My last doctoral work with Lukas Zeininger at MPICI, in collaboration with Dr. Paolo Giusto, read more about it in JACS: https://lnkd.in/eeDwekmU Janus droplets characteristically reconfigure, move, and tilt in response to chemical concentration changes, or chemical/thermal gradients. By shining a spot of ultraviolet light on the carbon nitride, we can direct adsorption of ionic surfactants. This is sufficient to generate Marangoni flows, and move droplets, which we use to measure molecule adsorption, desorption, and understand molecule charge selectivity, gradient type, and direction.

#QTNano: The formation of small polarons in CeO2 – x compounds have been investigated mainly on solids, compact surfaces, and large nanoparticles; however, those findings cannot be easily transferred for small ceria clusters, where size effects might play a crucial role. It's been a busy week for our lab - we have another preprint out on ChemRxiv! Here, we make progress toward our goal of establishing a unified synthetic strategy for accessing lots of different heterocycles. We take advantage of palladium's tendency to "walk" along carbon chains to enable cyclizations to larger ring sizes. Using our urea-enabled diene heteroannulation, we can now generate 5-, 6-, and 7-membered rings using a common synthetic route, just making a trivial change to one of the starting materials. I am happy to share that our recent work is out in the RSC- Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry (Org. Biomol. Chem., 2023, 21, 6914-6918), DOI: 10.1039/d3ob01174g   We report a novel nature-inspired Janus G–C nucleobase featuring two recognition sites: DDA (G mimic) and DAA (C mimic), which is capable of forming a linear tape-like supramolecular polymer structure. As demonstrated, the amino group of the self-assembling Janus nucleobase can be further modified to yield a highly stable quadruple H-bonding system as well as a masked self-assembling system cleavable upon exposure to light.   Overall, the salient features of the Janus G–C nucleobase are: (i) availability of DDA–AAD bifacial recognition faces, (ii) easy synthetic accessibility and (iii) the opportunity to introduce multiple functional groups.   We believe that these elegantly synthesized value-added monomers featuring a dynamic Janus G–C nucleobase motif with multiple substituents at the backbone will offer excellent possibilities for developing functional/smart polymers.   We thank Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), @IndiaDST and CSIR- National Chemical Laboratory for support. https://lnkd.in/dVPaNdcH
