LNG Boil Off and Vapour Handling Systems on LNG Carriers Boil Off vapours are produced during - Cool Down - Loading - Loaded and Ballast voyage Two types of compressors are used to handle these vapours : 👉High Duty (HD) Compressor which has high flow rate and low delivery (outlet) pressure. This is used in operations : - To return Natural Boil Off Gas to shore during loading - To return IG and NBOG during initial cooldown of tanks - To recirculate hot NBO to warm up cargo tanks before dry docking. 👉Low Duty(LD) compressors which has low flow rate and high delivery(outlet) pressure. Fearnleys is out today with their VLGC sector report by analyst Mia Groeng. The 21 page report gives a very good overview of the VLGC shipping market. If you don't have time to read it, I will give you my four key takeaways: 1: 15% of the fleet is above 20 years old as there has hardly been any scrapping the last couple of years which creates pent up scrapping demand. In comparison the orderbook is 20% of fleet which leads me into point 2: Yards are now packed with orders e.g. container ships and LNGCs. Hence, delivery slots are now 2028 which is a lead time of four years which is costly with today's interest rate level. At the same time, newbuild prices are historical high with a standard spec ship at $115m, although it's easily at $120m if you want to go for the upgraded Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) spec. Although Fearnleys note that they have more faith that MGCs and handysize ships will be the preferred ships for such cargoes near time. Avance Gas has four MGC newbuilds capable of carrying ammonia for delivery in 2025/6. Point no 3: There are only 22 newbuilds for delivery this year compared to 39 last year, and half of these ships have already been delivered which means fleet growth will be muted for the remainder of the year. And lastly point 4: Fleet growth will be even more muted next year with only 11 newbuilds set for delivery which is half the level of 2024 which again is 45% lower than 2023.
