A cancer survivor wrote powerful words about his treatment experience and drew some pretty stunning parallels to substance misuse. This piece stood out to me in particular as my dad is recovering from throat cancer. Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D who is the President/CEO of Family And Children's Association, a New York-based nonprofit organization, recently beat Stage 3B colorectal cancer and says the journey taught him a lot about how diseases are treated, namely substance use disorders. “Cancer and addiction are both serious illnesses that become more manageable and survivable with timely detection, front-line treatment, regular follow-ups, a robust support system, and a healthy dose of hope,” Reynolds writes. Reynolds has had two battles with cancer, and each bout was met with a full care team, constant check-ups, supportive and non-judgmental staffers, and in-depth analysis. “That's not what usually happens with addiction,” he adds. When only 6% of Americans with diagnosable SUD’s receive treatment, it’s no wonder that there is such reluctancy to find care in this field. In cancer care, most well-insured Americans will never have to battle with their insurers about coverage, haggling for medications or doctors visits.
