#National #Sorry #Day is an annual event in Australia that takes place on #26 #May. It serves as a solemn occasion to remember and acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly separated from their families and communities during the 20th century. These individuals, collectively known as The Stolen Generations, endured the trauma of being taken away from their loved ones in an attempt to assimilate them into white Australian culture. The first National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998, one year after the release of the Bringing Them Home report. This report resulted from a government inquiry into the past policies that led to the removal of children from their families and communities. Since then, National Sorry Day has become a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all contribute to the healing process for our people and nation. Despite progress, the challenges persist. Even today, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are still 10.6 times more likely than non-Indigenous children to be removed from their families. Recognizing the truth of our history is essential for addressing the ongoing intergenerational trauma faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities. Sorry Day reminds us of this truth and calls for continued efforts toward healing and reconciliation. Additionally, on 26 May 2017, the Uluru Statement from the Heart was delivered at the conclusion of the 2017 First Nations National Constitutional Convention at Uluru. This consensus document on constitutional recognition was developed by a council of Indigenous and non-Indigenous community leaders, emphasizing the importance of constitutional reform and recognition for First Nations peoples. The journey continues, and National Sorry Day remains a significant date in Australia's history, prompting reflection, empathy, and action. 🌿🖤💛❤️ (1) National Sorry Day - Reconciliation Australia. https://lnkd.in/g6jNty4X. Today, on National Sorry Day, we acknowledge, remember, and commemorate all those affected by the Stolen Generations here in Australia. We acknowledge the tangible and ongoing intergenerational effects it has had and continues to have on families, communities, and individuals.

Today we mark the anniversary of the 2008 formal apology to Australia’s Stolen Generations who were forcibly removed from their families and communities when they were children, through race-based policies set up by both State and Federal Governments in 1910 and continued as recently as the 1970s. We recognise the trauma experienced and ongoing for the Stolen Generations survivors and acknowledge all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were separated from family, community and culture. Through hearing their stories, and ongoing deep listening, we hope to join in on the healing journey and to be part of the solution into the future. Last year we launched our second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The RAP outlines 27 actions with 109 corresponding deliverables that inform and improve our practice. These deliverables were developed from consultations held across the country including truth-telling with Aboriginal Elders. We continue our deep listening so together we can support better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people, communities, and families.

Why do we do what we do? 🌟 1. Compassion and Empathy: We care about the well-being of others and want to alleviate their suffering. Acts of kindness, including helping those experiencing food insecurity, creates a sense of connection and fosters a more compassionate society. 2. Nurturing and Nourishing: Food is not only essential for survival but also carries emotional and cultural significance. By providing meals, we are nurturing and nourishing individuals who may be experiencing hunger or food insecurity. This act brings comfort and a sense of security to those in need. 3. Dignity and Respect: Offering meals to those in need helps preserve their dignity and self-worth. It acknowledges their basic human right to have access to food. By providing warm meals, we contribute to restoring a sense of dignity and reminding individuals that they are valued members of society. 4. Hope and Support: A meal can symbolize hope for a better future. It can serve as a source of encouragement and support, especially for individuals who may be facing challenging circumstances. Providing meals helps alleviate the immediate burden of hunger and offers hope for a brighter tomorrow. 5. Community and Solidarity: By providing meals for those in need, we become part of a larger community working towards a common goal. It strengthens the sense of solidarity and reminds us that we are all interconnected. It fosters a sense of unity and encourages collaboration to address systemic issues related to poverty and food insecurity.
