NordGen coordinates a pan-Nordic project on #NordicCropWildRelatives (CWR) wild plant species that are closely related to our cultivated crops. These wild plants have for hundreds of years developed traits, such as resistance to drought and pests, that may be valuable in #plantbreeding of crops better adapted to #climatechange. As part of the Nordic project, inventories of CWR in various parts of the Nordic region have been conducted. Our nematologist Dylan Corner works with growers to help identify nematode (microscopic worm) pest issues and assess the resistance of crops and cultivars to certain plant-parasitic species. Plant-parasitic nematodes are found everywhere and can significantly impact fruit and veg crops. Dylan recently took his research to southeast Asia to share his knowledge and learn about the challenges these countries experience with nematodes. “My workshop significantly increased the ability of researchers in the region to identify nematode pests in their countries, hopefully improving food security,” Dylan says. “By increasing identification capacity within the region, we have proactively boosted biosecurity here in Queensland as we’ll be able to anticipate where exotic nematode pests may enter.” Dylan and his team are continually learning about new methods of detecting and identifying pathogens in crops and explore how they can use that information to help Queensland growers. #scienceweek #peopleofdaf #DAFCareers #onediverseDAF #passionandpurpose #bringlegacytolife #followyourpath

We noticed some small troublemakers sneaking in, so we hired some mercenaries from the predator Amblyseius swirskii. This predator works effectively by actively searching for its prey, such as small pests like mites, whiteflies, and aphids, using its senses to detect the presence of prey in the surrounding environment. Once the predator finds its prey, it captures it using its strong front legs and begins feeding on it by absorbing the fluids from the prey's body, leading to its death. After feeding, the predator can grow and reproduce rapidly, with females laying eggs in the agricultural environment. The eggs hatch, and the larvae begin searching for new prey. Thanks to its rapid reproduction and large appetite, the predator Amblyseius swirskii helps significantly reduce pest populations, protecting crops from the damage these pests cause. Now, a complete curfew has been imposed in the area, and I no longer notice the presence of pests in the air—it’s as if a flight ban has also been enforced. Don’t be deceived by its small size; it is very skilled at its job. Very pleased to share our study on opportunistic biological control of the Olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae, "OLF")! OLF was first detected in Hawaii in 2020- it is a major pest of olives, and is already on two islands. Our field surveys in 2021 and 2022 showed that two braconid parasitoid wasps, Fopius arisanus and Diacasmimorpha tryoni were able to attack OLF in Hawaii. Both the wasps were introduced decades ago to control other fruit fly pests- but today they are also helping with B. oleae.
