Excited to see this piece of research go "live"! My colleagues (Hannah Ring, Andrea Coombes, Ozen Guven, Ph.D. and Liza Kahn) and I synthesized 70 process evaluations of food production interventions with climate adaptation approaches for Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation. Some key findings include: 🌿 Project designers and implementers’ limited understanding of local context and failure to consult with program participants reduced the relevance of climate adaptation activities, which did not adequately identify or respond to community problems. 🌿 Stakeholders at all levels identified the importance of capitalizing on in-country technical expertise by involving research institutions, producer organizations, and extension workers in planning, implementation, or as project participants. 🌿 Evaluators of crop production, livestock, and fisheries interventions perceived that climate adaptation interventions failed to fully consider women’s roles and rights (for example, to land and livestock ownership), which ultimately precluded their full participation and uptake. 🌿 Programs were found to be unsustainable when participants perceived that activities were not profitable, useful, or a priority for their business. Chuan Liao’s (Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences) project assesses the global potential for utilizing organic underutilized resources (OURs) to advance the circular bionutrient economy (CBE) in support of a transition to zero-carbon agriculture. Cornell Atkinson and The 2030 Project provide funding for faculty to seize urgent and unique opportunities for impact-oriented climate research. Opportunity

Kudos to Sophia Mucci on her EXPO 2024 Research Poster with Dr. Norman Levine Agriculture is one of the top three economic drivers of South Carolina’s economy. Unfortunately, anthropogenic-induced climate change, with predicted increases in temperatures and occurrences of volatile weather events, poses a threat to global agriculture. Events stemming from climate change are likely to result in decreases in plant productivity and the profitability of agribusiness. Using a Geographic Information System (GIS), we are modeling the potential changes to the types of plants and growing environments across the state. In our research, we uncovered a notable scarcity of high-resolution data pertinent to South Carolina’s agricultural landscape. As we transition to the next phase of our research, we are integrating crop modeling software to account for a range of variables impacting crop health. Our research seeks to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how climate change will impact South Carolina agriculture and provide tools to help guide future agricultural decisions. One question is whether these kind of JRC collaborations can eventually form a multi-functional scientific network along the lines that Spinelli would have envisaged, or whether they remain more ad hoc and focused on specific projects/topics

Today the Joint Research Centre renewed our collaboration agreement with the French National Research institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment INRAE We have been working together in the fields of agriculture and climate change research since 2018, and we intend to continue this fruitful collaboration. Our joint efforts in the coming years will go towards: - Developing integrated approaches to defining and assessing sustainability, applied to agriculture and food systems - Enhancing modelling capacity towards an integrated assessment of sustainability - Improving EU and global monitoring frameworks for natural resources - Capacity building for evidence-informed policymaking #Science4Policy Alessandra Zampieri Bernard Magenhann Salla Saastamoinen
