Sexual violence in conflict is a brutal tactic used to terrorize communities, destabilize societies, and perpetuate cycles of violence. It targets individuals based on their gender, exploiting power dynamics to inflict harm and sow fear. Women, men, and children are all vulnerable to these atrocities, facing physical, psychological, and social consequences that can last a lifetime.
 As an expert who has witnessed the resilience of survivors firsthand, I know they deserve better. Here's how we can make a difference: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲: We must hold warring parties accountable for respecting international law, which protects healthcare workers and facilities. 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿-𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲: Support organizations providing comprehensive medical and psychosocial services tailored to the needs of survivors in conflict zones. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿𝘀: Advocate for the inclusion of survivors and women led organizations in peacebuilding efforts, ensuring their voices are heard and solutions prioritize their safety. 
As we mark this important day, let’s honor the resilience of survivors, amplify their voices, and stand in solidarity with those affected by sexual violence in conflict. Together, we can create a world where peace, justice, and dignity prevail for all.

November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women👩👧 According to the United Nations, one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, mostly by an intimate partner.This violence has devastating consequences for women's health, dignity and security, as well as for the development and peace of the societies they live in. To end this violence, we need to challenge these norms and promote a culture of respect and equality for all. We also need to support the survivors of violence with knowledge, proof and sympathy, ensuring that they have access to justice, health care and psychosocial services. Together, We Must Break the Silence 56 Australian women have been killed in 2024. Each of these numbers represents a life cut short and a story of domestic violence that can no longer be told. As a survivor of domestic violence, I understand how difficult it is to speak out. The fear, the isolation, the feeling of helplessness can weigh you down. But silence can be deadly. We need to offer more than just awareness – we need to create spaces where those who are struggling feel supported and safe to share their stories, ask for help, and know they are not alone. If you are suffering in silence, please know that you have a community that sees you and supports you. Reach out. We are here to listen, to stand by you, and to fight alongside you for safety and justice. Let’s not allow these numbers to rise any higher. The national conversation around violence against women is rightly concerned with what we can do as a society to address this ongoing problem, and how our current systems and services can adapt to better address the needs of women experiencing violence. From our work, we know that collaboration and partnership are an essential tool in addressing complex problems, and that working in this way requires adequate funding and support. We encourage governments to provide the resources needed for this important work. Many women, especially First Nations, unmistakably encounter a higher percentage of unique and compound forms of violence. This results in vast barriers to justice, recovery, mental health and the ability to gain or remain in employment. The homicide victimisation rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander females is 3.07 per 100,000, compared with 0.45 per 100,000 for non-Indigenous females, AIC. 2 in 5 women experienced violence and 1 in 3 women experienced physical violence, ABS. With a national spotlight on violence against women, Canberra is today holding a National Crisis Roundtable on Murdered Women. The urgent necessity for increased Harm Prevention and long-term support for victims is unmistakable. It calls upon the Government and the Australian public, as well as individual businesses, to fight for justice. We must all be committed to making a change. #violenceagainstwomen 

I still struggle with this line of action because sure, everyone needs to be a part of the conversation and solution to end domestic violence, but why is the burden on women? Why??? I get the rationale but it still makes me very uncomfortable. The question is, who? Who should take the lead and do this? We are at the brunt of domestic violence! We have been advocating for action to stop DV! We have been creating safe spaces for victims/survivors! We have been working to enable access to justice for survivors! Should we then add the burden of carrying the same men along??? With what energy and resources? What will we have left to do all we need to do for ourselves and other women? I live in a city where if I am walking home when it’s dark and see a man behind me, I will immediately be gripped with fear! Whereas, when I see a woman, I immediately feel safer that someone else is on the road with me! Do you understand how bad it has gotten? This doesn’t even bring trans and non-binary persons into the conversation and the kind of violence they experience too. Guess who the main perpetrators are? You guessed right! From those creating our policies to those leading our religious spaces and determining what’s morally right, to those leading our communities, to those ‘leading’ most homes as the self acclaimed ‘heads of the house’. Guess who they are??? You guessed right again! In the course of my work, the only way women feel safe to open up during my gender equality or SGBV trainings is if there’s no man in the room. This is the only time they feel safe and I always strive to ensure this. So, it begs the question for me: Are men not aware of domestic violence? Are they clueless about the harm they’re doing? Have they been so socialized that they have no idea that harming women is cruel? Why should the burden of trying to reason with them or reform them, be on us? It’s like telling the victim to beg their oppressor not to harm them! Where are the other men who always chant ‘Not All Men’ online? What are they doing to reform their fellow men? Domestic violence is an issue that is as old as time and I am very conflicted on how and why we should carry the burden of reforming men, ontop all we still have to do for ourselves as women, just to keep safe. I even understand and key into the conversation around raising our boys to grow up with kindness, love and desensitized of patriachal behaviors including the violence that comes with domestic violence. But when you say men, I immediately get tired!
