Education Development Trust (EDT) is an international not-for-profit organisation which supports global efforts to address key #education challenges at scale, and is a trusted partner of governments, academics and #MultilateralAgencies globally. Celebrating Africa Day 2024 with CMS South Africa 1. What are the issues that will shape education in Africa in 2024 onwards? The impact of COVID-19 on the education sector will continue to be felt over the next couple of years as children have missed out on fundamental years of schooling during lockdown. This year’s cohort of matriculants would have spent majority of their grade 8 year at home in 2020 with the revised curriculum and assessment plan being implemented. Those same students returned to school on a rotational basis in 2021. Although some schools in more affluent areas where able to communicate with learners using online platforms in lockdown, the same could not be said for all schools in South Africa. How much the aftereffects of COVID-19 will affect this year’s cohort and those to come will be dependent on whether schools have been able to make up for lost time. 2. Is the right to quality education for all in South Africa and Africa at large being realised? What strategies can be implemented to increase access to quality education for marginalized communities in Africa, ensuring inclusivity and equity across the continent? In modern day Africa, an inclusive education system means access to technology and the internet. Sadly, in 2024, access to technology and the internet still varies according to race, geographical location, age and even gender. The lack of access to technology and the internet in rural and/or underprivileged communities also means lack of access to information and quality education. Society is then divided into those who possess the information and the knowledge necessary to progress, and those who do not. If rural and/or underprivileged communities do not have access to technology and the internet, they will continue to fall behind, and inequality will continue to increase. This is where bridging the digital divide, which is closely connected to technology and internet access, to promote inclusive education comes in. Improving infrastructure and providing rural and/or underprivileged communities with digital resources to improve their digital skills can go a long way towards bridging the digital gap which exists between those living in modern/urban areas and those living in rural and/or underprivileged areas. #cms #cmslaw #africaday #africaday2024 #africa #legalprofession #relevantlearning #youngafricantalent #transformtheordinary

What are the 5 issues that will shape education in Africa in 2024 onwards? a) Artificial Intelligence and new technologies to transform learning: AI and technology are already transforming the way students learn. The increase in the availability of mobile devices and internet access is showing great participation of African countries in embracing digital learning solutions to improve education outcomes. For example, in South Africa, the government has introduced the "Basic Education Digital Learning Platform" to provide online learning resources to students. This trend is expected to continue, with AI-powered tools being used to personalise learning, provide real-time feedback, and enhance student engagement. b) Student engagement, advocacy, and agency: Student engagement is a critical issue in African education, as it can significantly impact student motivation and achievement. Implementing initiatives to increase student participation and agency will shape the future of education in Africa, and these should be done with proper regulations in place. c) Teacher and leader pipelines: The quality of teaching is a crucial factor in education outcomes. Developing and retaining effective teachers and leaders can help in address challenges that Africa is currently facing, some African countries are implementing initiatives to improve teacher training and development programs. d) Future-ready education and systems to deliver it: Preparing students for the future requires a shift towards more practical, project-based learning that develops essential skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and collaboration. African countries are adopting innovative approaches to education, such as competency-based education and STEM education. 2. Is the right to quality education for all in South Africa and Africa at large being realised? What strategies can be implemented to increase access to quality education for marginalized communities in Africa, ensuring inclusivity and equity across the continent? Significant progress has been made in increasing access to education in Africa. However, many challenges remain. For instance, the right to quality education is enshrined in the Constitution, but there are still significant disparities in education outcomes between disadvantaged and affluent communities. Some of the challenges that marginalized communities are facing are outlined below. Celebrating Africa Day 2024 with CMS South Africa   What are the 5 issues that will shape education in Africa in 2024 onwards?   Digital divide: The use of technologies has the potential to shape education in South Africa as well the continent at large. The main issue we face in the continent is that there is a huge digital divide, advanced technological tools are not easily and readily available. We need to close the digital divide in order to progress in advancing the manner in which teaching is done and the adequate transfer of skills.   Lack of infrastructure: The digital divide is partially caused by the lack of infrastructure, if we invest more in the continent, we may be able to close the digital divide.   Quality teachers: The fact that the continent does not have enough quality teachers is another concern, this causes a lot of disruption within the education system, and it hinders the growth as well as the progress of learners.    Youth involvement: The implementation of youth advocacy programs may impact education in a positive manner because this would allow the youth to encourage and mobilize each other to face the challenges that they are currently facing. This would include them being active in educational policies that affect them as well as them demonstrating leadership skills in speaking about barriers that affect quality education from their own perspective.   Is the right to quality education for all in South Africa and Africa at large being realised? No, the right to quality education for all is not realised in South Africa as well as Africa. The week that is: 14.08.2024 I had yet another privilege to Facilitate the high level meeting of the Higher Education Regularos in Africa to dialogue and generate shared understanding for #TransformativeEducation for a competitive Africa. The points of discussion included: - The vision and aspiration for Delivery of transformative Education -Regulation and governance of higher education in Africa and a need to build capacities for quality assurance - Leveraging technology advances and implications for a competive higher education sector - Strengthen collaboration across the continent. I asked the Regulators to reflect on two fundamental questions - What RADICAL CHANGE is needed in the way they do business in their country to achieve different outcomes towards transformative education in Africa? - In their own personal capacities ( and within their space of influence) what can they do to initiate the transformative change in their institutions and countries. What a robust discussion and reflections we had. Yet another successful event. Today is the last day of the #RUFORUM2NDTRIENNIAL What an engaging week this was. I am glad to have been given an opportunity not only to be part of; but to lead and guide some of the highest level discussions towards shaping that transformative agenda for Africa

The 7th meeting of the Monitoring Committee of the European Funds for Social Development 2021-2027 (#FERS) programme was held yesterday and today. Two days of work resulted in a number of decisions to launch new important projects and calls. Among them, a new initiative in the area of #socialinnovation - incubation support for teachers-innovators who want to develop new methods of helping students with special educational needs. The decision was also made to finance new tool for researching and monitoring the demand for green and digital skills as a response to changes taking place in the economy and the labour market. In this area, it was also decided to finance new #MOOC-type courses on the NAVOICA platform in order to use the potential of higher education institutions for the development of the economy and digital and green transformation. Today, important decisions were also made about financing services and training in the area of digitization of the health care system and the development of #eHealth. This was the 7th meeting of the #FERS Committee since its inauguration in January 2023. At that time, the Committee decided to launch 101 new calls for proposals and individual projects with a total value of over PLN 2.5 billion. This is almost 47% of the total FERS budget. Achieving such a result would not be possible without the full commitment and effort of many Committee members from various backgrounds during all meetings and hundreds of hours of preparatory workshops.
