We had an opportunity to meet Matheus Reis. Other trees create the shadow, so the sunlight doesn’t penetrate over the cacao trees. All the leaves on the ground protect the humidity and when it rains, the soil keeps wet. The African cultivation is different, they put fire in the trees to get the clean place and in this place, they plant only the cacao trees, this is called the monosystem. There is expertise to train them to sell the cacao to different countries. Big companies buy cacao from Africa because they get cacao at a lower price. It is believed that coffee was introduced to Colombia by Dutch Jesuit missionaries in the 18th century. Planted initially in the northeastern mountainous region, coffee cultivation quickly expanded nationwide as smallholder family farms recognized its potential as an income source. Colombia's inaugural coffee export of 2,500lb to the US in 1835 solidified its presence in the global market, leading to significant export growth driven by improved infrastructure such as railways and the completion of the Panama Canal. By the late 19th century, Colombia had established itself as one of the world's leading coffee exporters. In the early 20th century, a few significant producers dominated the industry with large haciendas, employing primarily peasants, indigenous people, and formerly enslaved people. In 1927, key coffee producers from the Zona Cafetera, also known as the Coffee Triangle, came together to establish the Federacion Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia (FNC) to advocate for farmers and secure fair prices for their coffee on the global market. However, the economic challenges of the Great Depression in the 1920s and 30s resulted in many haciendas facing bankruptcy. To safeguard coffee production, the government intervened by acquiring these large farms and redistributing them to workers who diversified their crops alongside coffee cultivation. Colombia maintained its prominence in the international coffee market through strategic marketing efforts, including creating a fictional character that appealed to consumers worldwide.

Espirito Santo coffee is produced from four smallholder farms in the southeastern Mountains of Brazil. The second biggest coffee-producing state, Espirito Santo is typically known for its Conilion (Robusta) production, but there are still a number of Arabica producers focusing on specialty coffee. Seeking to take advantage of the mild climate and slower cherry maturation, farmers produce coffees known for their acidity and fruit forward profiles. The Arabica coffees here are selectively handpicked and due to the relatively small farm sizes, this approach allows the producers to focus on and maximise quality. The farms that contribute to this lot are an average of 20 hectares, with 8 hectares of coffee planted. Espirito Santo primarily grows Catuai and Mundo Novo varieties. 🚀 Increase in Peruvian Ginger Exports 🌱 In June and July 2024, Peruvian ginger has shown a notable increase in its exports. In May 2024, Peru exported 4,062 tons of ginger worth $7.5 million, representing an increase of 17% in volume and 65% in value compared to the same month last year. This increase is mainly due to the increase in the average price per kilogram and the growing global demand for healthy foods. The main export destinations were the United States, the Netherlands and Canada. 🌟 First International Ginger Convention 2024 🏆 In addition, Peru held the first International Ginger Convention 2024 in Pichanaki, Chanchamayo province, Junín region.
