*Cotton COT Update 02/27/2024: Specs Continue to Drive the Market Rally* Specs continue to drive the market higher with Spec longs adding new (+2.3k) lots this week and liquidating (-571) bags. With specs approaching the maximum, the market is building up significant bearish from new long positions despite the strong positive momentum. Commercials sold 9.5k lots net this week, with the majority of the selling coming from new commercial shorts taking advantage of high prices (+7.1k) lots. Although Commercial Longs also sold, liquidating (-2.4k) lots, perhaps transferring positions to buyers. Going forward, the spec longs will have little room to add as we are merely ~8.6K lots from the recent highs in 2018 and 2021. This could be a turning point for the cotton market, or we will likely need to see the commercials drive it higher.

MADE $30K ON WHOLETAIL DEAL  You heard that right. $30k. On a WHOLETAIL deal. Not a wholesale deal.. What's the difference?  A wholesale deal is a deal where you contract the property and sell it to somebody else off the market, usually investors who pay cash.  A wholeTAIL deal is where you contract a property off market, do minor work (such as hire a clean out crew to clean it out) and then you list that baby on the market for the highest bidder! *Cotton COT Update 10/30/2023: Cotton Consolidates Near Lower End of the Range* Cotton is consolidating back in the lower end of the 80-90c range in the sell off of the last few weeks following the failed break out in Sep. This week specs sold 5.6k lots with most of that coming from spec long liquidation (-6.5k). Typically the liquidation leaves room for a counter trend rally on Monday, but today the bearish sentiment has taken over and even the weaker dollar hasn't helped this market. At this point almost all of the length that was acquired in Jul- Sep has been sold back out, with only about another 10k lots or so left to sell (to get back to the recent lows). This suggests that we may have one or two more weeks of selling, but to get beyond that we will need to see the spec shorts start to become active. Commercials have been adding to length, with commercials actually bucking the trend of seasonality and Commercial Shorts liquidating 15k lots. Typically we see both commercial longs and short adding to positions at this point so this is a bit peculiar. Looking to next week, the market seems to have found support for now but we could see the selling push Cotton down to test the bottom edge of the range. Based on positioning alone, we don't see a strong incentive to break out of the range and the fact that we have sold most of the longs already suggests that the market should find support between here and 80c.
