That's amazing medical progress: heart surgery and especially implanting valves in newborns and children has always been a problem as these valves would not grow along, necessitating additional replacement surgery several times until adulthood was reached. A new approach uses donor valves that actually grow along and obviate these risky operations. I'm thrilled to share our PCPLC Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium's latest publication in the Journal of Pediatric Surgery! Our study, "Comparison of the PCPLC Database to NSQIP-P: A Patient Matched Comparison of Surgical Complications Following Repair of Anorectal Malformation," highlights a critical advancement in pediatric surgical care. Why is this study important? Anorectal malformations (ARM) are rare and complex, making it challenging to establish best practices. By comparing 30-day outcomes from the PCPLC registry with the NSQIP-P database, we demonstrated a 91% concordance rate, proving the reliability of our data. This means more accurate tracking of complications and better-informed decisions for patient care. Our findings validate the PCPLC as a robust tool for improving surgical outcomes and ensuring high-quality care for children with ARM. She has a history of intermittent vomiting and poor weight gain since birth, diagnosed and treated as gastro-esophageal reflux disease. Clinical Challenges in Pediatric Surgery: Common Pediatric Surgery Scenarios

Pleased to announce the publication of our paper "Cost of Pacing in Pediatric Patients After Congenital Heart Surgery" in JAMA Network Open. While rare, postoperative heart block requiring permanent pacing in children after congenital heart surgery is a major complication. It imposes a significant burden on the child and the family. In this paper, we report estimates of direct and indirect costs incurred by the patient family over the first 20 years after pacemaker implantation.
