In mass timber construction, everything is exposed, therefore thoughtful placement of mechanical and electrical components is imperative. This level of attention to detail has shifted the paradigm of design towards craftsmanship rather than mere functionality. As a result, innovative design solutions have emerged as a pivotal driver in the success of mass timber projects. Detailed design considerations, especially regarding mechanical and electrical systems, transform construction into a craft that elevates the overall quality and appeal of modern workplaces. Additionally, the growing need for sustainable and environmentally friendly building practices and materials, particularly regarding the reduction of embodied carbon, makes mass timber adoption a great alternative towards a greener future. #InternationalMassTimberConference #Innovation #FutureofConstruction #Sustainability

And the good news hits keep on coming! Our internal Sustainable Practice Group is one that is very dear to me and my values, and we have, for years, been doing research that both fulfills our personal passions and enriches our firms work. We are finally sharing that work publicly; like many of our peer firms, we believe that sharing of research is best way for us, as an industry, to advance our ability to address the climate crisis we are facing. Our white papers are called Sustainable Practices, and our inaugural issue is on Mass Timber. We, like many practitioners in NYC, are optimistic about using Mass Timber, and are excited about its potential as a sustainable alternative to traditional practices. Please check out this paper, based on the impressive work our Materials sub-committee has been doing, and big thanks to Dattner Architects for supporting all the work SPG does, and Wei Wang, AIA, LEED AP BD C and Brandon Wang, AIA for their work leading the group and on this paper.
Dattner Architects' Sustainable Practice Group (SPG) is a volunteer committee that facilitates a positive environmental impact and improves occupant health, equity, and the resilience of the projects we touch through research on energy use, renewable energy, indoor environment and human health, sustainable materials, site ecology, and urban infrastructure. Our research is shared through a series of white papers called Sustainable Practices. Our first paper is on Mass Timber, in which our Materials sub-committee shares their findings of in-depth exploration of Mass Timber, examining key aspects such as harvesting, processing, manufacturing, and life cycle analysis. The Sustainable Practices report on Mass Timber is available on Issuu https://lnkd.in/dYxRMuEW

Thank you AIA Los Angeles for the invitation to connect with fellow practitioners and researchers focused on carbon reduction strategies. It was a great opportunity to share ideas and insights. Looking forward to more collaborations soon. Opinion Piece: Takeaways from The 7th Annual 1.5C Symposium on Climate Change Written by Luciana Varkulja – Founder & Principal, uma architecture & design The recent AIA|LA 1.5°C conference featured an impressive group of speakers who ignited an essential dialogue on carbon, engaging in a critical conversation on the impact of construction materials on climate change, and challenging the architectural community to integrate carbon considerations into their work. Despite converging on similar subjects, the speakers exhibited a lack of a unified strategy for architects and designers. The discourse highlighted varying perspectives on Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), weighed the importance of upfront carbon emissions against end-of-life considerations such as design for disassembly, and critiqued the oversimplified notion of mass timber as a carbon sink solution. 🌱 How can we actively shape a more resilient land use in planning, architecture and construction in the direction of sustainable practices and conduct? 📐🏗 “The ground we stand on is all we have. Throughout history, it has provided us with everything, as the foundation of civilization. In our latest article, we try to lay an ear to the ground, listening to the knowledge that grows from the soil that feeds us. Cultivable soil is a scarce resource, at the intersecting point of many interests.” - Excerpt from the latest article in work package 3 “Sustainable Construction Materials and Architecture”, led by SUSTAINORDIC. Through interviews with 5 experts in and around the building sector this article focus on the underrepresented voice of our land use in architecture and planning in the Nordic context. “If we do not act now, I think we will have a much harder time to transform. We need to get our politicians to understand that either we engage in incremental adaptation, or we will have to deal with a transitional chock in the future.” – Anders Larsson, researcher and teacher at the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management, SLU Alnarp Nordisk Råd og Nordisk Ministerråd, Nordic Innovation.
