With the historic MOU signing between the three global organisations, the immediate call to action is the founding of the Circular Cities Network. Now the work will start in developing action-driven outcomes. Chengdu Shengxianhu TOD Project Chengdu, China Chengdu is building the Tianfu Greenway to a high standard and improving the urban green transportation system integrating the three networks of “rail, bus, and slow travel”. By 2035, the proportion of green transportation travel will reach 85%. At the same time, a 15-minute community life service circle will be created to ensure that citizens' life "does not leave the community for small needs, and does not leave the community for large needs". The project should give full play to the advantage of being close to Chengdu North Railway Station, relying on the economic and industrial advantages of the adjacent railway to form a crowd gathering, and at the same time, by creating a cultural and creative industry cluster, forming a core area of industry-city development, optimizing living facilities, and creating an integration of industry and city, livable and suitable for business. Punggol Digital District’s (PDD) Tower 4 is a Super Low Energy Building (SLEB) that has been Green Mark Platinum SLE certified. It is a model of sustainable design for other buildings to follow, according to Ramboll’s Associate Director, Buildings Sripragas Nadaraja, who discussed how it is leading the way for future SLEBs, at the annual JTC Corporation Singapore Green Building Council seminar 2024.   The building is just one part of the 500,000m2 PDD, which is a vibrant and inclusive new technology and innovation district designed by WOHA Architects as part of Singapore’s strategy to sustain long-term economic growth by bringing jobs and social amenities closer to residents. Driven by a focus on climate-responsive design, passive design strategies have been meticulously integrated alongside advanced mechanical and lighting systems to optimise energy usage. This concerted effort has resulted in a remarkable 45% reduction in operational carbon emissions, equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting over 6000 trees. Tower 4's sustainable ethos extends beyond operational considerations to encompass embodied carbon. Utilising an innovative combination of Mass Engineered Timber (MET) and concrete reinforcement structures, the tower has achieved net-zero embodied carbon when considering only the upfront carbon emissions of major structural materials like timber, concrete, and steel. Sripragas, who advised on the Environmental Sustainability Design (ESD) at PDD, discussed the optimisation strategies employed during development, demonstrating to attendees how these strategies were seamlessly integrated into the architectural design, showcasing a harmonious blend of sustainability and innovation.   The built environment is undergoing a decarbonisation transformation and PDD is central to this transformation in Singapore with SLEBs like Tower 4 transforming the sustainable built environment. https://lnkd.in/dVz3CWwV #sustainability #slebs #superlowenergybuildings #sustainablebuildings #greenbuilding

Impressive engineering for a world record elevator. The Bailong Elevator, located in Zhangjiajie, China, is a glass elevator embedded in a cliffside. Standing at 326 meters, it holds the record as the world's highest outdoor elevator. Offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, it’s an extraordinary feat of engineering and a popular tourist attraction. This marvel features a triple-tower structure anchored to the cliff. Its construction involved drilling through the quartz sandstone cliff and securing the towers with steel supports. The elevator's transparent walls provide panoramic views as it ascends at a speed of 3 meters per second. With a capacity of 50 people per cabin, it efficiently transports visitors to the summit, showcasing the integration of cutting-edge technology with the natural landscape. This is unquestionably a marvel of engineering but, just as the elevator is high, the environmental price paid to realise this work is also very high. Was it worth it?
