🌍 How do we address the new demands in spatial planning? On day two of the METREX Spring Conference in Brussels, CEO of perspective.brussels, Antoine de Borman, introduced the ‘Triangle of Hell’ conflicting priorities challenging the spatial planning agenda: demographic evolutions, social cohesion and climate/environmental objectives. June 24-27, 2024 Session: SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE – Spaces, networks and services for socially just neighbourhoods Session organizers: Christine Benna Skytt-Larsen (University of Copenhagen), Lina Berglund-Snodgrass (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences), Ebba Högström (Umeå University), Lita Akmentina (Tallinn University of Technology), Matilda Alfengård (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences), Johanna Holvandus (Estonia Urban Lab) & Alisa Koroļova (Riga Technical University) Global transitions and challenges continuously highlight the urgency to create healthy, inclusive, and socially just cities that promote equal life chances at the spatial scale accessible to everyone, namely the neighbourhood. Social infrastructure (SI), understood as the range of spaces, networks and services within which social capital can develop, that meet local needs and contribute towards good quality of life, represents a critical element of social sustainable cities and neighbourhoods (Klinenberg 2018; Greater London Authority, 2017; EuroHealthNet, 2018). In this session, we invite empirical and theoretical contributions for discussing the need for establishing and facilitating SI in contemporary cities at the neighbourhood scale (e.g. public libraries, schools, playgrounds, sports facilities, shared green spaces and meeting spaces). We focus on the governance and planning of such facilities in relation to broader processes of segregation, gentrification, urban renewal and NIMBY-processes, and on the social consequences for individuals and the social cohesion of the wider community. We are interested in contributions that approach SI at the neighbourhood level in their historical, contemporary and, possible, future dimensions. In addressing the topic in this broad vein, this session seeks to chart the potentials of the geographies of social infrastructures in the Nordic context. The exchanges between cities are crucial for promoting sustainable urban development through the exchange of solutions, that improve how cities are planning and implementing green actions. In my op-ed for Eco in Città I went through some of the stories I crossed during the first European Urban Initiative City-to-City exchanges that I facilitated. The stories of French, Irish and Italian cities involved in these exchanges show how green areas, public spaces and mobility infrastructures can be planned in an innovative way if innovation is fostered by a dialogue on urban policies, alternative funding schemes and participatory methods Pentapolis URBACT European Commission

How do you start #rebuilding during a devastating war? Elena Chevtchenko and Nazar Gresko are leading one of the nine groups in the international workshop "Working on Water" from Nov 27 - Dec 1. This interdisciplinary program, hosted by IABR , is part of Panorama Ukraine's broader initiative to rebuild Ukraine as a model EU state. The Working on Water #event is the first in this initiative and tackles integral #water resource management in the aftermath of the Kakhovka dam disaster.  This collaboration includes Dutch, Ukrainian designers, and global architecture graduates and will dedicate itself to developing strategies, building blocks, and design solutions for the various challenges. The Panorama initiative goes #beyondborders, aiming to develop frameworks for rebuilding, offering lessons and solutions applicable #globally. Explore themes like #sustainableenergy, #circulareconomy, and regenerative water management, fostering collaborations for a resilient, socially and environmentally sustainable future. The lessons learned, approaches, strategies, and the propositional (design)solutions developed during these workshops will be made accessible to be deployable elsewhere: after all, water is a global and planetary issue.
