Student Housing market is like a sleeping giant, about to wake up and show everyone how big he is. Fair warning over. Consider this please, the student loan system is going to be tightening or clamping down and budget overall for universities and colleges are already stressed even before the upcoming economic cycle dips. So, in reaction many colleges and universities are looking for more ways to create revenue ASAP. So besides raising tutition they are planning to develop more students housing to capture the revenue they are currently letting escape to thenlocal mom and pop landlords around their campuses. Student Housing like all stackable & repeatable floor plan type buildings is almost perfect fit for the Modular building process. If you aren’t curious by now about Thy Modular process and associated service offerings that companies like BECC Modular Systems capable to provide; than perhaps you aren’t creative enough too. 𝐂𝐉𝐂𝐓 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐌𝐒𝐂𝐏 Completed just before the end of 2015, CJCT's MSCP for the University of Leeds sits on the southern precinct of the city centre campus. Providing 607 car parking spaces, the scheme completely redeveloped a brownfield site: formerly used as part of the university's car parking provision, the development of a MSCP was undeniably a more efficient use for the site. Externally, metallic square shields are imaginatively designed to form an undulating panel arrangement to mimic the double curve of the scheme's original concept. Each square consists of 2 high points and 2 low points on opposite corners, separated by 600mm, generating three-dimensional relief. Adjacent corners share a node point, allowing individual shields to work together to create a single coherent undulating surface which has been designed to achieve the free area required for passive, natural ventilation. The University of Leeds MSCP possesses a sense of quality and permanence, a transparency and character which engages with both the campus and the wider city.

Today I learned that it’s more expensive for international students to study architecture at the University of Edinburgh than at the University of Cambridge, and it's getting even more expensive! 🤯 So, how much will it cost our International friends starting in 2024/25? The University of Edinburgh raised its tuition fees from £32,200 to £34,800 per year. 📈 The University of Cambridge raised its fees from £32,064 to £33,627 per year. On top of the annual tuition fees come: - Drawing and modeling equipment - Printing, drawing, and model-making materials, costing around £300 per year - Possibly a laptop - Field trips Plus other costs like accommdation, visa, living costs... 😵 It's crazy to think how long it might take to earn that back, given ARB registered Architects in the UK start from £31k per year (outside London) and £36k (London), then add on tax and living costs 😧 #Architecture #University #Careers #Students

On Thursday, March 21st, Laura Katon, Specification Manager at Unilin Insulation will be presenting a CPD to the students of the University of East London at the Atrium of the AVA Building, Docklands Campus, London E16 2RD. This CPD will also be available online to CIAT members. Laura will be presenting on ‘Designing to Zero Carbon’. The CPD introduces the Government’s response to the Part L consultation, the proposed timetable to introduce Part L reviews – in particular 21 and 25, and Future Homes Standard. The CPD also focuses on the following: Reviewing Government's commitment to a ‘fabric first approach’ to zero carbon through regulations.  Typical specification of Part L and Future Homes Standard for fabric compliance. An introduction to various climate change initiatives while exploring embodied carbon as a primary target on such initiatives. Student Spotlight: Mariah Hoffman is a 3rd year Master of Architecture student going into her final semester at TSOA. Why did you choose to become a student at TSOA? When deciding which Masters of Architecture program to pursue I had 3 goals in mind: 1) I wanted a school that was design-build focused 2) I wanted to be back in the Desert, and 3) I wanted to have the option to pursue licensure through an accredited degree program. TSOA hit all three of those! What is your favorite part about being a student at TSOA? My favorite part about being a student at TSOA is the community life. The school has a long-standing history of “learning-by-doing” and that is still baked into our experience from cooking together, to hosting lectures, to spontaneous karaoke nights etc. I believe learning to be in community with others while training to become an architectural practitioner is valuable and necessary. What is the studio project you are most proud of? The studio project that I am most proud of thus far is my future campus design. We were prompted to design a potential future campus for TSOA over a year-long studio. My design went through a few iterations but ultimately landed on a Desert responsive option made of compressed earth blocks. I learned a lot by developing the project in more detail and producing a drawing set. It was especially productive being the “client” of the future project and really examining the design from the lens of the current end-user. #architecture #architectureschool #mastersofarchitecture #studentspotlight
