Call for Papers..... 10th International Conference on Cities, People, Places - ICCPP 2024 (both in physical & online) Theme: "Resilient Cities: Enabling conditions for life to thrive". November 08-10th, 2024 Colombo, Sri Lanka Organized by the Centre for Cities + Department of Architecture of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, jointly with Sri Lanka Institute of Urban Designers. This year, ICCPP Conference will be held for the 10th time, since its start in 2013. This year conference too proposes to examine the multi-faceted nature of urbanism. It calls upon the academics, researchers and practitioners of the urban realm to share their understanding of various approaches and mechanisms both currently implemented and implementable in the future in different contexts. It calls upon all to share their experiences and enrich the current knowledge of city building and urban management, based on sustainable urbanism. Shaping the City - Forum for Sustainable Cities and Communities European Cultural Centre, Italy 24-25 November 2023 Palazzo Michiel, Venice We experience change as the greatest constant of our time every day. 40 percent of global CO2 emissions are attributable to the building activities, half of the world population living now in urban settings, and the cities as sources of the three quarters of global emissions. As paradoxical as it may sound: architecture, urban planning and building activities are not only part of the problem, they are also part of the solution. Not building any more is not an option. It is fatal to ignore the problems and refuse to tackle them. A simple argument for our commitment: our time in flux constantly creates challenges to which spatial, technical and societal answers must be sought. For example, when it comes to creating resilient, i.e.  adaptable, reusable buildings and infrastructures. In future, however, we will probably build more consciously and therefore also less. Building less means higher quality and a more holistic approach. It is, therefore, very crucial that the schools of architecture, design and planning question their curricula, pedagogies and institutional structures. It is an honor to be in the panel on behalf of EAAE European Association for Architectural Education and ZHAW Architektur, Gestaltung und Bauingenieurwesen. This year visiting RISEBA University of Applied Sciences Architecture & Design Conference to see what the Baltics have to offer regarding authenticity and maturity of its design ecosystem. Themed the “Blind Spot” the event focussed on the implicits in architecture, design, education and perceptions in urban development inspirered by Lavian Architect Astra Zarina My TOP4 moments today: 1) Paper presentation on “school building as teacher”: a perspective that an academic building needs to inspire design teaching; application of design and built techniques, invite students and teachers to dialogue and develop purpose. 2) Keynotes about repurposing abandoned Italian villages as herigage sites. How design a purpuse and renewed destination for citizens that do not exist in advance; attract the new locals. 3) Philosophy of slowing down by accelerating long term vision in urban development; hope to create sustainable living understang a slow paced ecology and fast pace human life (on top of it) 4) Paper presentation by Camilo Cerro about “Dwelling for the Desert” showing design principles (and experimentation) for building in the UAE desert: creating new practices in building taking regional sustainability challenges inyo account. 'COAM 2023 Congress: Present and Future of Housing in Madrid' On 16 November 2023 at 11:15, Jeroen Dirckx, a partner at #KCAP, will participate in a congress at the Madrid Institute of Architects (Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid/COAM) in Spain, as part of a larger day of programming entitled 'Present and Future of Housing in Madrid'. At the event, Dirckx will discuss recent work of KCAP, particularly focusing on the studio's urbanism and residential projects; as well as engage in a dialogue moderated by Samuel Azasu; the Executive Director of the Master in Real Estate at the School of Architecture, at the University of Navarra. The conference is oriented toward the real estate industry, and culls together a wide range of professionals, educators and practitioners, using Madrid as a case study through which to look at the current state of the real estate industry, in cities throughout the world. Particularly relating to the current economic conditions and environmental concerns that are effecting the architecture, real estate and developer industries as a whole—again, using Madrid as a case study to examine larger, global macro urban issues.
