Recently, Maryland adopted a new law that underscores the importance of empathy and listening to communities we serve. The bill ensures children and youth receive new luggage for their personal belongings when entering foster care or moving to a new location. NATIONAL GIVE SOMETHING AWAY DAY | JULY 15 Most of us have the benefit of having more than we need to live. National Give Something Away Day on July 15th offers us an opportunity to share some of our bounties. #GiveSomethingAwayDay In the United States, giving is on the rise. According to Giving USA, giving rose in all nine major categories in 2016: **Religion **Education **Human services **Giving to foundations **Health, public-society benefit **Arts **Culture and humanities **International affairs **Environment and animals. Giving benefits us all, too. It improves our community and puts much-needed services and assistance within the reach of those who need it most. The giver also benefits. Giving not only makes us feel good but it teaches gratitude, too. Whether we give financially or by offering our skills and services, we lift others up. Our words can be a gift, too. Showing empathy, encouragement, and compassion to someone during a time of need may make us feel vulnerable, but it empowers those we offer it to as well. You can also share your time with others by volunteering. While you may not think you have something to give away, you might be surprised. Tangible items like clothing, money, and food aren't always what's needed, though they may be the most common. On this day, broaden your goals and organize a give something away fundraiser. Also, look around your community, and identify the places that need you the most. Focus your energies there. HOW TO OBSERVE GIVE SOMETHING AWAY DAY In the spirit of the occasion, consider paying for the coffee of the person behind you in line. Many other ways benefit others, too. Clean out your closet or garage and make a donation. Donate to the local food pantry or little library. Volunteer your time or skills. Teaching someone gives them the opportunity to pay it forward. Create gift baskets for shelters. Start a fundraiser for your favorite charity. Help a neighbor in a time of need. While you're giving, be sure to post on social media using #GiveSomethingAwayDay.

In the spirit of giving and community support, I'd love to share an incredible story that recently unfolded through a local The Buy Nothing Project group her in Cary, NC. For those unfamiliar, these groups are a part of a global movement encouraging people to gift items they no longer need, fostering a culture of generosity and sustainability. A compassionate community member generously offered an item on the group, aiming to assist someone facing challenges. Moved by another member's account of a single mother and her struggle raising her nieces, she was inspired to amplify her impact. This led to a heartfelt collaboration among strangers in the Buy Nothing Group, culminating in a thoughtful gesture to gift a complete Thanksgiving dinner to the family. The story doesn't end there. In a remarkable display of collective kindness, the group members, previously strangers, united to raise and donate almost $2,000 in gifts, ensuring the family experiences a joyous and memorable Christmas. This story isn't just about the holidays; it's a testament to the power of community. It shows how complete strangers can unite to make a significant difference in the lives of others.
