Multiple career and education pathways need to exist for students in Washington state. In Washington, "nearly 90% of high schoolers say they want to continue their education after high school, but only 50% of high school graduates immediately enroll in a postsecondary program, compared with 63% nationally." We can improve these numbers by offering different education pathways during and after high school, including certificates, apprenticeships, and associate and bachelor's degrees. Amidst transformative changes in the traditional education landscape, changes are underway to equip students with tangible real-world skills, highlighting a shift away from conventional graduation standards and postsecondary planning. 💡 The State of Indiana is a great example. 👏 Indiana legislators and education officials are spearheading a transformative shift in high school education, focusing on career skills through internships, apprenticeships, and early career credentialing. 🛠 With research from Georgetown University emphasizing the need for skills beyond a diploma, the state is overhauling graduation requirements to better prepare students for the workforce. 🎓 The introduction of Career Scholarship Accounts and a renewed emphasis on career planning showcase Indiana's commitment to equipping students with practical skills that meet their needs and interests. Legislation requires schools to teach students about career planning, training programs and high-demand jobs. 💼 The Indiana Department of Education is hosting community and parent focus groups to help guide the vision and changes for the upcoming year. Some of the topics being discussed include: 1) A greater emphasis on work-based learning experiences, internships and apprenticeships; 2) More time spent with career counselors and/or employers; and 3) Requiring students to earn credentials for careers before graduation This forward-thinking initiative is gaining national attention, positioning Indiana as a leader in career-focused education! Great teachers help create great students. In fact, research shows that an inspiring and informed teacher is the most important school-related factor influencing student achievement, so it is critical to pay close attention to how we train and support both new and experienced educators. The best teacher-preparation programs emphasize subject-matter mastery and provide many opportunities for student teachers to spend time in real classrooms under the supervision of an experienced mentor. Just as professionals in medicine, architecture, and law have opportunities to learn through examining case studies, learning best practices, and participating in internships, exemplary teacher-preparation programs allow teacher candidates the time to apply their learning of theory in the context of teaching in a real classroom. It is critical for veteran teachers to have ongoing and regular opportunities to learn from each other. Ongoing professional development keeps teachers up-to-date on new research on how children learn, emerging technology tools for the classroom, new curriculum resources, and more. Expanding College Horizons for NYC Youth.     Did you know 1 in 5 NYC youth lack access to tools and guidance to pursue higher education?     Many students are the first in their families to consider college and miss early exposure to campuses and career paths. They lack mentors to guide them through applications, financial aid, and more.     This leads to overwhelming numbers of qualified students foregoing college and missing life-changing opportunities.     At Roads to Success, we are breaking down these barriers through growing our immersive college access programs across all five boroughs. This includes:     🔹 College prep and financial aid literacy workshops  🔹 Campus tours for underserved students  🔹 Scholarships  🔹 Essay writing and interview prep  🔹 Paid internships and career workshops  🔹 Ongoing mentoring and coaching     We have supported over 2,000 students in visiting colleges and exploring careers and leadership roles in the past year through our College Access Pathways Program and workforce development initiatives and workshops. Did you know? Hispanic Serving Institutions, also known as “HSIs,” are critical to making postsecondary education a reality for many Hispanic students. Five City Colleges of Chicago, which include City Colleges of Chicago-Harold Washington College, City Colleges of Chicago-Harry S Truman College, City Colleges of Chicago-Malcolm X College, City Colleges of Chicago-Richard J Daley College, and City Colleges of Chicago-Wilbur Wright College, are all designated as Hispanic Serving Institutions. As HSIs, they provide important pathways for in-demand jobs, apprenticeships, internships, fellowships, mentorships, and work-based learning initiatives through public-private partnerships and have partnered with their local school districts to offer dual enrollment programs.
