UK has toyed with a ban on Alcohol, several times. We're STILL living with Alcohol Legislation, brought-in over 100 years ago, during WW1. Many in Scotland will tell you, the birth of Irn Bru in Falkirk was as a direct result of early drives on 'responsible drinking', mainly for British Empire Productivity reasons! Heavy engineering in Central Scotland was fuelled on Beer. Some Shipyards in Glasgow had Mobile Bars, designed to cater for extremely thirsty welders, by setting up at the Shipyard gates! Many wanted to stop this Gallon-a-day habit, though. Temperance wasn't just a USA thing. Let them drink 'Ginger'! To this day, the UK landscape is peppered with Halls, Cafes and Buildings that were a reminder of the early 20th-Century 'Temperance' movement. Prohibition in 1920s USA has already shown how a complete Alcohol Ban would play-out. The answer is: Badly! And there are already many places in the World where Alcohol is banned, for Religious or 'Productivity' reasons. To think that the World is a booze soaked place is mainly true though. More places have it than don't have it. It's been shown that it's pretty hard to put the 'Genie back in the bottle', so perhaps our biggest opportunity lies with Education? Letting 'consumers' know the effect this Legal Drug has on the human body and teaching them about the Ingredients? In a more fun, less alarmist and altogether non-Draconian way. Education, when it's entertaining, is always easier to absorb. Training is the way to go. #DrinkLessDrinkBetter

**MINIMUM PRICING UPDATE** The Scottish Government have today published their "final report" on alcohol minimum unit pricing. Excellent piece by Cormac Healy in today's Irish Independent. The article highlights that Ireland’s attitude to alcohol continues to change and mature. Evidence of this includes Revenue data which shows that per capita alcohol consumption in Ireland has fallen 30% over the last two decades and continues to fall. While Gen-Z, in particular, have shown to have a much different relationship with alcohol than generations previous, the trend of drinking less and drinking better is evident across all age categories. As an industry, we are committed to promoting moderation, and research in the article shows that nearly 70% of consumers believe that "when in comes to the consumption of alcohol, we should focus more on more education and awareness rather than more regulation". #PrideofPlace #DrinksIndustry #DrinkResponsibly https://lnkd.in/eQ_WuXQv

From nudging consumers towards lower alcohol beverages to creating jobs across its value chain, the #beer industry has proven to be not only an important socio-economic pillar of the EU economy but also a potential asset for its public health objectives. It is therefore important that the role of the #brewing sector is adequately recognised and supported when it comes to fiscal policies. As a new political mandate is about to start, we call on EU policymakers to pursue a more progressive excise tax framework that is fair to beer versus stronger alcohol categories, while respecting the principle of national subsidiarity. Alcohol taxes play a crucial role in reducing alcohol consumption and related harms, but they remain the least-used policy instrument globally and in the WHO European Region. The WHO/Europe webinar on 24 May 2024 explored the "𝐔𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬". This webinar had active participation from experts, EVID-ACTION networks, Member States, youth networks and early career researchers. The key observations were that: · In the WHO European Region, about 𝟓𝟎% of Member States have no or zero tax on wine, while at least 𝟒𝟗 Member States apply national excise taxes on beer and spirits. · By increasing the price of alcohol, 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, especially among specific groups such as 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞. · Alcohol taxes not only save lives and prevent social problems: they also promote 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲 and generate 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞. · Due to the low level of taxation, alcoholic beverages in the EU 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 compared to regional averages. Full disclosure: I do not drink, have not since May 24, 2011. I am a peer recovery support specialist and I help those WHO WANT TO REDUCE OR ELIMINATE SUBSTANCE ISSUES. I certainly will not harass anyone who is having a drink with a meal or at a party. Drinking does not mean you are an alcoholic. If you can drink responsibly, more power to you. Do not drink and drive. Just do not take the chance. Are you alcohol dependent? Ask someone like me or an LCDC. Are you a binge drinker? (I was.) Again, ask someone who understands what that means. Two drinks a week? How on earth do they plan to regulate that? Beer was never my drink. Two beers with a good meal was it. Alcohol drinkers are not criminals just because they drink. This is an example of a nanny government.
