Disney+ stepping into sports in Europe "Disney+ has made its first foray into the European sports market with the acquisition of rights to the UEFA Europa League and Conference League competitions in Sweden and Denmark." "It’s the first time that an international streaming giant has acquired a major sports rights package in the Nordic TV market, though Amazon has recently sublicensed 10% of all Premier League games each season in Sweden and Denmark in an agreement with Viaplay." The Walt Disney Company already has a big investment in sports content around the world, in the Americas through ESPN so its already got a big sports footprint. It's interesting that Disney+ has taken these rights, as there's no ESPN+ in Europe, is Disney looking to build sports into its Disney+ brand? Or, could it be playing the long-game in opening itself up for sports with the intention of ciphoning it off and launching ESPN in Europe eventually? Although, ESPN has little recognition in Europe as a television platform. #livesports #tv #television #livefootball #livetv #football #footballrights #tvindustry #streaming #streamingplatforms #streamingservices #streamingmedia #disneyplus https://lnkd.in/eRM5P6gt

Sports & Entertainment is a big topic. From the players on the field, the stadiums around them, and even the crowds who came to see it all. What’s also there is the entire fan experience: a carefully choreographed set of systems that most people don't see (by design). With the FIFA World Cup, NBA All-Star Game and the Olympics and Paralympics coming to Los Angeles, what's next for the future of Sports & Entertainment?

Smart tempered thoughts below on how it is still VERY early for local broadcasters to declare victory over RSNs in the race for local sports rights; remember, teams will be dealing with massive TV revenue holes that OTA reach alone will not even come close to replicating in the near-term, if ever. The below commentary via John WallStreet & Patrick Crakes lays out one scenario (tiered RSN model); the NBA's upcoming national rights deals - which may now also include some form of local rights - may provide another. https://lnkd.in/gUDRRQYV

🔲 BREAKING NEWS in the Sports Streaming World | Venu Sports vs Fubo 🔳 In a significant legal development, a U.S. District Court judge has halted the highly anticipated launch of Venu Sports, a new sports streaming service created by Warner Bros. Discovery, Fox Corporation.and The Walt Disney Company. This ruling comes as a victory for Fubo, a competing sports-centric streaming service, which filed the lawsuit earlier this year. 🔳 Fubo’s lawsuit argued that Venu Sports would "substantially lessen competition and restrain trade," accusing the entertainment giants of using their market power to create an exclusive sports channel offering while forcing other distributors to carry broader bundles of less popular channels. This decision has been hailed by Fubo CEO David Gandler as a win for consumers, ensuring a more competitive landscape for sports streaming. 🔳 Venu Sports, set to launch at $42.99 per month, was aimed at cord-cutting sports fans, offering major league content from the #NBA, #MLB, #NFL, and #collegesports —key programming that has traditionally anchored cable TV bundles. The service was expected to attract 5 million subscribers in five years, reflecting its potential to reshape the streaming landscape. 🔳 However, the legal battle is far from over. Warner Bros. Discovery, Fox, and Disney have vowed to appeal the decision, defending Venu Sports as a “pro-competitive option” that would enhance consumer choice in a fragmented market. This case highlights the critical role live sports play in the streaming era, where traditional cable is rapidly declining. 🔳With the stakes high and the legal fight continuing, the future of sports streaming remains a hotly contested battleground. Stay tuned as this story develops. #StreamingWars #SportsStreaming #VenuSports #Fubo #WarnerBrosDiscovery #FoxCorp #Disney #LegalUpdate #MediaIndustry #CordCutting #LiveSports #CompetitiveMarket #ConsumerChoice #EntertainmentNews #DigitalTransformation #MediaTech Image credit: Getty

📈 Something for us in #Sportsbiz to continue to watch: According to Axios, Americans continue to disengage in political and general news, as evident in the web traffic data screenshot below. This aligns with the increase in average viewership across sports; for example, in 2023, the NFL saw a 7% increase in viewership at 17.9M on average, per ESPN. We expect to see this translate to more brands coming to the table in 2024 to acquire and expand sponsorship rights and assets from sports properties, athletes, and broadcasters. It will be interesting to see how this continues as we lead into the election, and how this impacts churn on streamers who are acquiring sports rights. Shout out to Sara Fischer for the stellar media coverage.

How Streaming Sports Case Could Open New Doors for South African Sports Federations Venu Sports is a streaming service accused of operating without proper licensing, effectively as a "pirate" platform. It recently faced a legal setback when a US judge granted an injunction in a fuboTV lawsuit, barring Venu from streaming sports content without proper permissions, setting a key precedent in the fight against digital piracy. The Venu Sports case highlights the importance of protecting sports content from piracy, which directly affects revenue streams. For South African sports federations, this case underscores the need to secure proper licensing and commercialize their content effectively. By doing so, they can attract legitimate partnerships, increase global exposure, and ensure sustainable funding, ultimately strengthening the local sports industry.

As teenage sensation Luke Littler turbocharges interest in darts, O&O's Joe Topping and Charlie Catterall explore how the success of individual athletes can be best harnessed. "The extent of the impact of the ‘Littler Effect’ will largely depend on darts’ ability to convert as many of these new, ‘intrigued fans’ as possible into casual fans in the short term, and then, in the long run, convert them into avid fans. The more successful a sport is in doing this, in theory, the greater the value of future rights deals." Coach turned Recruiter. Passionate partner of growth, professional development and seeing others achieve their goals!
Sports broadcast seems to be in a constant state of evolution. Most of those changes are often small, seamless improvements enjoyed by fans. Heck, it wasn't too long ago NBA games were broadcast in tape delay in the U.S. The post-pandemic landscape has seen much more drastic changes, with Amazon having the most notable move securing Thursday Night Football. Hulu did not trail far behind (being under the Disney umbrella certainly helps) with their incorporation of live sports. Now it is Netflix's turn, does this mark the changing of the guard for good or just a minor adjustment to how we consume our sports? #sportsbroadcast #livesports

Local sports viewership is booming, but local sports broadcasters are going bust. The collapse of Diamond Sports Group, which owns Bally Sports and airs games locally for over 40 U.S. pro sports teams, spells trouble for Regional Sports Networks that historically relied on heavy subsidization from cable subscribers who don't watch sports. Sports leagues are already testing out new approaches to local broadcasting that present less revenue in the short term but greater fan accessibility over the long term. My full analysis, and how we got here, linked below. 📺 What’s your take? Drop a comment or reach out if you'd like to chat. https://lnkd.in/eUsRFreU
