Smallholder farmers form a key part of the global agroindustry, by providing over 80% of the food consumed in a large section of the developing world. Despite the above, small farmers are neglected due to issues like increasing fragmentation of landholdings, combined with reduced investment support and demotion of small farms in economic and development policies. Under the proper conditions, smallholder farmers can be at the vanguard of a transformation in world agriculture. They hold many practical solutions that can help place agriculture on a more sustainable and equitable balance. Youth in agribusiness are witnessing a surge in production and the creation of decent jobs, thanks to the support of FAO Rwanda through the "Integrated Country Approach (ICA)" project. Here's what to know.

"Courageous financing" could be the game-changer in African agriculture. As Adesuwa Ifedi, SVP Africa Programs at Heifer International, highlighted in her recent CNBC interview, the risk in the sector is a significant barrier to financial penetration. If the government doesn't incentivize innovative thinking, this vital sector will continue to be overlooked. The term 'courageous financing' resonates because it's the kind of bold, patient investment that can transform Africa's agriculture. This sector is not only critical to Africa's food security and economic stability, but also has the potential to contribute significantly to global food security. Kenya’s National Value Chain Support Program, under the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), is set to revolutionize agricultural productivity through innovative e-incentives. These incentives are crucial for boosting productivity, reducing post-harvest losses, and linking farmers to better markets. The County Aggregation and Industrial Parks (CAIPs) initiative will be a game-changer, offering small-scale farmers centralized facilities for value addition and connecting them to industrial parks for shared resources and economies of scale. This collaboration between county governments and private firms promises significant advancements in agro-processing and manufacturing, fostering sustainable agricultural practices and economic growth. I look forward to seeing how CAIPs will enhance forward and backward linkages, improve market access, and drive Kenya's agricultural sector toward a more productive and sustainable future.
