STOP and read my ode to advertising*. (*published some thoughts in a book back in 2007. Re-inventing some ideas as we speak. **Got no time for Debby Downers.) Here I am. A creative. A strategist. A connector. I work in advertising because it’s fun. But beneath all this fun, I add value. To society. To culture. To the past, present and future. Firstly, by paying taxes. Secondly by producing context. Some call it art, others waste. Advertising is as valid as an industry as any other. In fact: advertising is one of our most cultural coining industries**. We tell stories through pictures, words, experiences, sound. We bring solutions to problems. We have responsibilities. We connect people. We connect ideas with people. We work with smart and enthusiastic people every day. Yes, we are artists! We raise topics. We are allowed to be silly. We work hard. We are always part of a team. We reflect zeitgeist. Advice for young creatives: Use the word 'funny' five times in the same sentence. This is the type of stupid little game I play with myself when I need to blow the dust off the old noodle or get a lazy pen moving its rump across a blank sheet of paper. Good, fast, or cheap? Admittedly, this old adage makes me cringe- yet I still find it to be true! I pride myself in producing high-quality content. Anything of quality takes time and time = $$$. At best, you get 2/3! While pondering this, I found an article that claimed this phrase is just not true… but that clickbait was behind a paywall so I never got to the bottom of it.
