When considering BESS for your application, the design engineer must remember that there is no free lunch. All energy provided by battery storage systems must be originally supplied for charging of the batteries, in addition to the losses that occur in the energy conversion process. Consider the use case where the flexibility and dynamic response of a BESS is necessary or beneficial compared to conventional back up or emergency diesel genset power.

When designing a new plant, or performing large modifications to an existing plant, such as adding a BESS, the owner should ensure that the necessary system studies are performed, and the plant philosophies are created or updated. The philosophies of particular relevance when considering BESS addition to a plant are: - Plant operational philosophy - How the BESS will support different plant operational modes - Define redundancy groups and ensure complete redundancy of all sub systems Power system philosophy: - Planned electrical network configurations - Blackout prevention/load shedding/load sharing arrangements - Plant frequency and voltage regulation (where not grid connected) - Black start procedure - Fault ride through intentions - Automatic blackout recovery - BESS operating modes in use

In any application where the main electrical network must not suffer a blackout condition it will be necessary to have redundancy in the electrical supply. Where practical, this can be achieved by having multiple, independent grid connections, with on site back up power generation for continued operations in a loss of grid situation. In the event of loss of grid power, a BESS can support the facility local power network during the changeover time from grid to local generation. In addition, the BESS can perform power quality functions while not providing active power support for the network.

The Power Engineering certification exams are approximately three hours in length and consist of 100 multiple-choice questions. A grade of 65% or higher is required to receive your certification from Technical Safety BC which allows Power Engineers to work in the province per provincial guidelines.
