This issue is deeper than face value. Parents, teachers, and more importantly our society as a whole share the problem. Young aspiring teachers are bright eyed and bushy tailed thinking of the difference they will make inspiring the youth of America. Then they realize they could be making more as a Walmart employee. They plan their careers on hopes and dreams, not realty. They strike, they complain about all the extra hours, they burn out and yet all of the facts about the reality of what it is to be a teacher is readily available online. Parents, both work to keep up with the Jones’s and leave their kids with no support at home with homework and allow their children to use electronic devices for hours a day to keep from having to interact with them. Society allows and even promotes parents who aren’t educated or can’t support their own lifestyle to have 5+ kids in a single parent household. There is no way for today’s infrastructure to keep up with the demand. Mandatory self care for teachers, a decrease in population, and a careful review of elected officials prior to voting would help our education system. If you as a parent can’t afford school lunches for one child, consider not having several more. The budget for basic needs not being provided from home takes away from educators salaries. This impacts teacher retention and overall productivity of the school systems. Additionally, gym class is no longer mandatory for many students, and ADHD diagnosis is handed out like candy on Halloween. We place children with special needs in a classroom with peers with teachers aren’t trained to deal with the increased demands of those children who require more attention. This may seem like an ideal situation where all are included. However, this also places the entire class at a disadvantage. Society needs to take a step back and reduce the systemic burden on our educators and the education system as a whole. Instead of placing blame on teachers and parents we need to work together as a unified front to create the best possible scenario for the educational system we have in place to thrive. Remove our polarized personal agendas and trendy political ideology and focus on the reality of the educational gaps, ethics, basic human needs, and the limits of our local and national infrastructure. We are all to blame. We have an amazing educational system, it just cannot perform effectively or efficiently given the demand that our society places on it.
