Today, I am not here to brag about an #achievement but to share an #experience. I am here to share a different #perspective and a lifetime lesson that I learnt as a #nurse, as a family member, and as a human. One month ago, a very close person to my heart passed away. I lost someone who kept me going, who had my back, and who pushed me to improve in my academics and in my overall life. He passed away after intracrancial bleeding, seizures, kidney damage, heart issues, and a lot more. Is it that easy to say? Definitely no. Was it easy for him? Definitely no. Was it easy for us as his family? Again, no. But where is the different perspective behind this personal story? As a nurse, I could not save a very close person. As a ‘hero’, I could not. I advocated for his needs, but I couldn’t keep him longer by my side. It hurt a lot. However, this same person used to tell me to move forward no matter what. Today, as I reflect on this tough time I passed through, I ask other healthcare workers in the field: Do you provide your patients with the care that you would like your close family member to recieve? Do you empathise with the patient and his/her family? Do you go beyond your specific nursing or medical practices? Do you treat the patient as a person and not as a medical case? My dear colleagues, take your time thinking about the above questions and the next time you go into your patient’s room, think again: What can you do differently to help your patient? It took me a heartbreak and a loss to think as a family member, not just a nurse. Do not wait up until that happens and take this as your sign. Be there. On episode 467 of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Joan Naidorf DO, an emergency physician, speaker, and author based in Alexandria, VA. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Dr. Naidorf discuss her 2022 book, Changing How We Think About Difficult Patients: A Guide for Physicians and Healthcare Professionals. Dr. Naiforf's thesis is that we can all too easily fall into the habit of thinking negatively about our patients. She also contends that, when it comes to how we think about our most challenging patients, there are clear steps that we can take to change that calculus and stop allowing our relationships with patients to be poisoned by negativity, judgmental attitudes, and resentment. Dr. Naidorf trained at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. She is board-certified in emergency medicine. TALE FROM THE OTHER SIDE This weekend I found myself on the other side of the patient experience. On Sunday, I went to the ER as a patient. While I don't want anyone to have an emergency, it is good to view things from the other side. No matter how much we try to empathize with patients, nothing beats being one to see what patients go through. What went well - the nurses and the physician were great. They had great personalities and were easy to talk to. They exuded confidence and did their jobs well. They were fast. They talked me through everything. What could be improved - ER beds are horrible, so uncomfortable. The lag time - it could not be helped. The ER was busy. At times, I was told someone would be back in 10 minutes. 1 hour later they came back. Not truly their fault. We just need to make sure we lead the patient to expect reality. Round up on times so when you come back earlier, it is a bonus. Overall, I had a great experience.. I made sure to tell the staff that. I also wrote down the name of every staff member that cared for me so that I can mention them by name when I give them the highest ranking when I get the patient satisfaction survey. I also wrote them a google review mentioning their first names. Administration loves this kind of stuff. This world is so eager to criticize. I was recently asked by a colleague why I'm involved with the Commission for Nurse Reimbursement. At first, it was a curiosity. But, last October, my 22-year-old daughter was hospitalized for viral meningitis, and the hard realities of the current nursing environment came to life in front of me as the family of a patient. As nurses, we've all faced the heart-wrenching decision of whether or not to let our loved ones stay in the #hospital alone. It's not that we don't trust our colleagues, but we understand the harsh realities of a cost-minimization #healthcare system. The pressure to discharge #patients quickly, understaffing, and the focus on efficiency can sometimes compromise the quality of care. We've seen firsthand how easily things can be overlooked, how vital information can get lost in the shuffle, and how patient needs can fall through the cracks. That's why we feel the need to be there, to observe and advocate for our loved ones, to ensure they receive the attention and care they deserve. It's not about protecting them from the nurses but from the potential pitfalls of a system that isn't always patient-centered. We're not just nurses; we're #caregivers, #advocates, and protectors. We're the ones who understand the importance of being present, of asking the right questions, and of making sure our loved ones aren't just another number in the system. This is my "why" for the advocacy work I've leaned into over the past year.
