A More Sustainable Olympic Games! 💚 How Paris 2024 is Doing More with Less 💚 Paris 2024 is setting new sustainability standards. They're doing more with less. The Games have a strict carbon budget. Here's how they're achieving it. ⮕ 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Paris 2024 cuts emissions by 50%. Aligned with the Paris Agreement. They account for all carbon emissions. ⮕ 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲𝘀: 95% of venues are existing or temporary. No need for new, permanent constructions. The Aquatics Centre uses solar panels and recycled materials. ⮕ 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: 100% renewable energy is used. Venues are connected to the grid. No temporary diesel generators. ⮕ 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱: More plant-based food options. 50% reduction in single-use plastics. Reusable catering equipment. ⮕ 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: Public transport to all venues. New cycle lanes and bike parking. Electric, hybrid, and hydrogen vehicles. ⮕ 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆: Reduce, rent, and reuse resources. 90% of equipment will have a second life. The 2024 International Olympic Committee – IOC in Paris is set to be sustainable, fully aligned with the Olympic Agenda 2020. 🌍 The Paris 2024 team is committed to halving the carbon footprint compared to previous Games by implementing innovative solutions in energy, food, transport, and more. Can Paris win Gold for Green? The Paris Olympics begin in just 10 days. The organisers have set incredibly ambitious goals to be the ‘world’s most sustainable Games’ with the key metric a pledge to ‘cut the carbon footprint of the Games’ in halfvs previous events. A key part of their approach is thinking ahead by anticipating and avoiding impact. Proactively starting with the end in mind vs offsetting damage after it has been done is a ‘front foot’ approach that should really be the approach for all major sporting events. A carbon budget was set which includes all Games planning and operations - from construction to energy and transport, catering and procurement. Paris 2024 also proactively calculated its "material footprint" – a first in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Venue by venue, the organisers created a detailed map of required resources, aiming to minimise them and control their life cycle before, during and after the Games. In addition to using 100 per cent renewable energy during the Games, Paris 2024 is minimising the use of diesel generators. The few generators that will have to be used will be powered by biofuel, H2 or batteries. All venues will be connected to the grid to avoid the use of temporary energy solutions. In addition, Paris 2024 has developed a methodology for analysing and reducing the Games’ impact on biodiversity and translated this into the design of more sustainable temporary venues. There are a huge raft of other measures being put into place too, from a circular economy strategy to reducing plastics and ensuring long term benefits for the local community. Whether they can deliver all they have set out to do remains to be seen but the ambition is incredibly impressive. Large sporting events are a key part of pop-culture and leisure time. As everyone is clued in on what's happening at the Olympic Games, let us dial back and look at what the games have done with their sustainability promise. While initiatives like easy access to free, unbottled drinking water and the reduction of single-use plastics are definitely quick wins, this particular game has had some big wins too. These have included: 👉 powering all venues with 100% renewable electricity 👉 using existing and temporary venues 95% of the time 👉 100% reuse of catering equipment and infrastructure 👉 employing principles of co-design and rental on a large scale. 💭 100% Waste-Free: Dream or Reality? 🌍 Discover how Paris 2024 has redefined the standards for major sports events with bold initiatives. Here are the four 4️⃣ key strategies: 1️⃣ Passing on numerous equiments to the sports movement. 2️⃣ Giving objects a second life through a large public sale "braderies" for local communities and the general public. 3️⃣ Creating a platform for professionals to reuse infrastructures. 4️⃣ Launching a solidarity program. 🤔 Is this enough? Let's take a closer look. First, 80% of waste production was expected to be avoided or recovered compared to previous games. The Organizing Committee aimed to reduce single-use plastic waste by 50% compared to previous games. ✨ Ambitious Goals: 🔄 90% of marketing materials and signage will be reused, repurposed, or recycled. 🔄 95% of Olympic facilities were already existing or temporary. 🔄 100% of temporary furniture and structures will have a second life. 🔄 100% of infrastructures and temporary structures will find a second life, especially with sports federations. 📈 Challenges Remain: Despite these efforts, challenges persist. 🏖️ The tower for surfing events in Tahiti was redesigned following criticism of its environmental impact. 🥤 Beverage distribution in single-use plastic containers that came from large 1.5L coca-cola plastic bottles. 🏷️ Only 15% of licensed merchandise is locally produced. Final Assessment: 72% of resources are linked to sports infrastructures, 12% to site furniture, 9% to public reception, 6% to merchandise, and 1% to equipment. 💪 ⚙️ Circular Economy Principles: 🔋 Eliminate the use of new resources by designing without waste or pollution. 🌱 Use only renewable resources. 🌿 Create systems that actively regenerate ecosystems.
