National Manager of Disability Employment @ genU Training | Upskilling and Enhancing the Disability Employment Sector
What an amazing conference! Hats off to Disability Employment Australia for orchestrating such a well-planned and executed event. From a stunning venue and an ever-entertaining MC to a lineup of passionate and informative speakers, every detail was spot on. Deep respect goes out to DES providers and their staff. They dedicate their working lives (often much more), to support people with disabilities into meaningful employment. It's neither glamorous nor easy, yet despite their unwavering dedication, they're often left waiting until the final hour for crucial information required to start planning effectively for the future. During times like these, it's clear how invaluable an invested and passionate peak body is. I'm sure you'll agree that this opportunity for us to gather, listen, question, and collaborate as one sector is something immensely appreciated. Change is upon us, but too often, its burden falls solely on our Execs and Senior Leaders, with frontline staff kept in the dark. But the change required in DES right now can only occur at the speed it needs to, if our frontline staff are aware, informed and involved in contributing to this change. Despite the many unanswered questions, one thing is certain: quality is everything. If your staff don't know what quality looks like or the changes required by them to achieve it, sharing the load and evolving together will be impossible! I'm really inspired to be working in partnership with DEA in assisting DES providers in achieving this important evolution! Both U.S. and Minnesota law require employers with more than fifteen employees to provide reasonable accommodations to disabled workers, but the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Minnesota Human Rights Act (MHRA) provisions aren’t identical, and the differences can be important. #Accommodations #WorkplaceProtections #EmploymentLaw

Navigating the workplace with a disability may present unique challenges, but it should not hinder your ability to pursue a successful career. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), disabled employees are entitled to reasonable accommodations in the workplace, ensuring equal opportunities for all. If you encounter obstacles in performing your job due to lack of support or uncertainty about your rights, it's essential to understand your legal protections. Employers are obligated to provide accommodations promptly, and failure to do so may constitute discrimination. Protecting your privacy is paramount. Disability laws safeguard your confidentiality, limiting employers' inquiries about your medical condition. From interviews to post-employment inquiries, your rights to privacy remain intact. If you believe you're facing disability discrimination or harassment, you have recourse. You can take action to hold employers accountable and seek compensation for any mistreatment. Every disabled employee in Georgia deserves a safe, accommodating work environment that respects their privacy and upholds their rights.

🏛️ Last week HM Government launched its Disability Action Plan. Admittedly it would have been nice if this had announced that all The Disability Employment Charter recommendations would be enacted, but that was never going to happen given the aim of the DAP was not to address employment. ➡️ Nevertheless, the Charter got an important mention, with the DAP stating that “within the area of employment, several respondents and attendees of consultation events highlighted The Disability Employment Charter. Several commitments in the National Disability Strategy relate closely to the charter, including DU’s commitment to publish the findings of a consultation and next steps on Disability Workforce Reporting. Action in this area is therefore not included in this action plan, but is being taken forward through other ongoing work.” This is an important acknowledgment on the part of HM Government that the 160+ organisations who have signed The Disability Employment Charter are now too powerful to ignore. This in turn further strengthens our platform, legitimacy and resolve to continue to push the Charter’s policy proposals forward. ➡️ There is still a long way to go. Yet the more who sign the Charter, the stronger we will be. 👉 If your organisation is yet to sign The Disability Employment Charter, you can do so by simply emailing your logo to [email protected] for us to add to our website. 💪 Together, we have the power to bring about a long overdue step change in disabled people’s employment outcomes.
