Shrewsbury “relief road”. Not a relief at all, but a backwards step and hark back to disjointed and short sighted problem solving where roads always win and nature comes second. I commented about this when I head about it last October. It’s very sad to see today when I thought it was becoming accepted that building more roads to alleviate traffic bottlenecks in the form of “relief” roads simple moves the problem a little rather than tackles the cause - unsustainable road traffic growth. Valuing nature perhaps from a natural capital perspective in my mind would enable transport planners and policy makers to make more informed decisions and seek to protect important natural and culturally significant landscapes. I grew up in Shrewsbury and watched massive expansion of the road network carve up the green belt and drive out of town development. ( just look at Meole Brace now a retail park for example which used to be a great place to watch Lapwings). As a cyclist I was lucky to live in Shrewsbury which had so many fantastic local hills to cycle to and explore and this was accessible and safe for us to access by bike. Visiting the town today as many others where significant road development in the form of bypasses and “relief roads” has taken place, the roads are so much busier and I would struggle to let my kids cycle around and explore. Shrewsbury is a historic railway town - with great multi directional rail. Take the Meole Brace example above - the Shrewsbury - Hereford line passes right though this development but no rail station has been proposed -not for years anyway. Perhaps instead of more roads a rethink on transport strategy for the town could help here, integrating train and cycle routes and trying to tackle relentless car growth usage. Good to see this campaign going strong and worth fighting for.

This is an important story! The Esselen Tribe of Monterey County, California, is an example of how Native Americans are formally returning to their historical land stewardship. I truly respect indigenous California practices and philosophy in relating to the Earth by fostering growth of oak trees and root plants to provide sustenance by farming forests. Decades in the making, the massive $2.9 billion Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion aims to recreate the river's ancient, natural land-building processes by diverting a portion of the Mississippi's freshwater, sediment and nutrients into the Barataria Basin.
