When I started Rise Performance Group over 10 years ago, it was a pivot in my life that saw me take a sizable risk at a time when I had a family, an oversized house, two teenagers (pictured below), and a promised college education looming. When I felt frustrated and thought about giving up, I’d ask myself: “What will my family think of me if I fail? Is that in alignment with who I am as a husband and father?” This may sound harsh, however, I have learned we are motivated by pain and pleasure. I have also learned that pain, or fear of loss, is a greater motivator than pleasure, or desire for gain. By thinking through the reasons you want to achieve a goal and the pain you will suffer if you do not achieve a goal, you can move achievement from something you “should” do to something you “must” do.  You will almost always get your must-haves but will rarely achieve your should-haves. 13 years later, the momentum we are enjoying today started because success was something we “must do”, rather than something we “should do” in the early days. "When setting goals for yourself, consider shifting your mindset from viewing them as something that you should do, to something that you must do to achieve success. To do this, focus on both the rewards you will receive from your accomplishments, as well as the negative consequences that failure may bring."
