I am excited to share my key takeaways from the recent session of the National HR Mentorship Programme, Cohort 9, facilitated by Christabel Dugah, SPHRI, on Leadership & Personal Effectiveness. The session emphasized the importance of self-discovery. Knowing who you are, understanding your capabilities, and having a clear goal. This foundational self-awareness is crucial for personal and professional growth. We also delved into the concept of SMART goals, which are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. This framework is essential for setting and achieving meaningful objectives. We learned about the significance of self-management. If you can't manage yourself effectively, you can't lead and manage a team successfully. Self-management is a key component of effective leadership. Another key insight was the evolving role of HR. Gone are the days when HR was seen merely as an administrative function. Today, HR is a strategic partner, involved in anticipating trends, planning strategically, and making critical decisions that shape the future of organizations. We also learned that, as an HR manager, it is essential to give your employees a listening ear. Even if you can't provide an immediate solution, listening to your employees makes them feel heard and valued. Demonstrating empathy in these interactions is crucial for building trust and a positive workplace culture. Another essential aspect of the discussion was emotional intelligence. Understanding and managing our own emotions, as well as recognizing and influencing the emotions of others, is vital for effective leadership. Emotional intelligence helps in building strong relationships, managing stress, and making informed decisions. Thank you to Christabel Dugah, SPHRI and the HR Certification Centre for this invaluable learning experience. Looking forward to teaching my short course on Mentoring for Inclusivity, Connection, and Engagement at Work, starting next week. As part of UW-Madison’s “Inclusive Leadership Certificate,” I hope this course helps empower participants to play positive roles in the emergence of new generations of diverse leaders, and workplaces focused on building inclusivity and authentic connection. The course runs online the mornings of Feb. 8 and Feb. 15, and registration is still open.
