The Fourth Circle is guarded by a figure Dante names as Pluto: this is Plutus, the deity of wealth in classical mythology. Although the two are often conflated, he is a distinct figure from Pluto (Dis), the classical ruler of the underworld.Those whose attitude toward material goods deviated from the appropriate mean are punished in the fourth circle. They include the avaricious or miserly (including many "clergymen, and popes and cardinals"), who hoarded possessions, and the prodigal, who squandered them. The hoarders and spendthrifts joust, using great weights as weapons that they push with their chests. Relating this sin of incontinence to the two that preceded it (lust and gluttony), Dorothy L. Sayers writes, "Mutual indulgence has already declined into selfish appetite; now, that appetite becomes aware of the incompatible and equally selfish appetites of other people. Indifference becomes mutual antagonism, imaged here by the antagonism between hoarding and squandering." There have been many artists who used Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy as inspiration for their art. For the painters in particular, William Blake’s drawings and paintings of Dante’s journey are among the most famous.  The coming months I’ll be regularly sharing a combination of Blake’s work and a composition of mine that was inspired by the painting and Dante’s corresponding verses. In the old days, the art of hagiography was confined to the clergy. These days, music journalists and self-appointed experts have taken over the task. Occasionally, thry do a deification too. It might be relevant to state that David Bowie was definitely not the messiah. Large parts of the 70s, whils creating an impressive body of music, he was a very naughty boy indeed. Even during the 70s, he made a lot of songs that were only okay or mediocre. Just some examples: Repetition. Red Money. Rock and Roll with Me. Win. Black Country Rock. Personally, I could do perfectly well without all of his mid-seventees Rolling Stones-style singles. But I buy into the general story that classic Bowie ended after Scary Monsters. There was a lot of nice stuff afterwards. I always get really very happy when I hear Absolute Beginners. But is it essential in a way that Bewlay Brothers or Always Crashing in the Same Car are? So here comes my question to you: which 10 individual post-1980 Bowie songs (composed and/or sung by him) do you truly consider essential Bowie? If you can explain why, happy to hear. This here is in any case my personal number 1, based upon the vocal performance. Self-appointed expert in action, I know ;-)

How often do we walk the road to Damascus How often have we experienced an epiphany along our journey. Are we capable of understanding such sudden and great revelations. How often have we just thought it was a figment of our imagination. How sometimes we think we have every answer, so wrong. How our paradigm prevents risk to discover more. How determined are we to search the truth, or merely follow vanity thinking we know best. Whether we enjoy the circus or opera,  life of acceptance is still the same. Accept that there are different formula's and equations. If the gift of suggestion is offered then you need to discover its source. Consider all options. GWW.
