AmeriCorps Vista Evy DiSalvo, through a three-year project, developed the Equitable Engagement Toolkit to guide NDC staff in prioritizing community voices and addressing historic inequities in design and planning. Historically, marginalized communities were often excluded from these processes, leading to detrimental consequences like Baltimore City's "Highway to Nowhere." Built-in the 1970s, this project exemplifies the lasting impact of failing to prioritize equitable engagement. However, there's a beacon of hope! Baltimore's Department of Planning recently launched a redesign initiative for the "Highway to Nowhere," committed to centering community voices and addressing the harm caused by the original project. This aligns perfectly with NDC's mission and the Equitable Engagement Toolkit's purpose. By centering historically marginalized voices, we can create truly inclusive and equitable design solutions that benefit everyone. A majority of the support received by newcomers in recovery is given completely on a volunteer basis by dedicated individuals in the rooms of recovery fellowships. Service work creates volunteers who are dedicated to their own sobriety and to the sobriety of others.
