Today we are launching our new research report: Barriers to Short Breaks. Short breaks are activities that mean carers have a break from caring and disabled people can do things they enjoy. This week is October half term in #Gloucestershire. Our research tells us that many parent-carers are going without these breaks. 94% of parent-carers who answered our survey were not currently accessing all the short breaks they felt they needed and 49% of parent-carers were not accessing any breaks at all. We also heard that disabled young people were not able to do the things they enjoy. Half of the disabled young people in Gloucestershire we spoke to were not attending any groups or activities outside of school hours this also means that many parents are going without a break from their caring responsibilities. The Queensland Government has announced a funding boost to provide free, healthy school meal options in communities facing increasing cost of living pressures. We know that access to and engagement with education is a protective factor for improving life outcomes. We know that the early years are the best space in which to identify needs and support children and families on their life journey. We know that where we can meet needs early, the demand on our systems lessens in time.
