A few weeks ago we leapt at the chance to not only fulfil a childhood dream of driving big trucks on a massive test track, but to answer a serious question. Is it really possible for big HGVS, or heavy goods vehicles, to go electric?! Commercial vehicles like lorries and #HGVs, travel roughly five times the annual mileage of passenger cars meaning the potential for improved air quality through #electrification is HUGE. However, the benefits extend beyond zero tailpipe emissions. The allure of low total cost of ownership is a major draw for commercial fleet operators who strive for maximum profitability and efficient operations. It’s not going to be easy, but a leading vehicle maker is spearheading the development of electric firetrucks. This could be a significant — and symbolic — development in the Net Zero effort. Across the US, there are about 200,000 fire trucks. Pierce, a “superstore” of purpose built vehicles, has made the first-ever EV truck. (It also won a major EV contract with USPS). Part of the struggle, which is the case for any large vehicle for that matter, is the sheer size of the battery needed. But the company has already tested out a number of these trucks in Wisconsin and has had great success. The EV fire trucks have backup diesel engines, but are designed to meet its daily duty cycle on electric power. What these trucks have going for them is that they typically don’t travel that far of a distance, and have to get to their destinations quickly, meaning that range shouldn’t typically pose an issue. According to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, battery electric vehicles made up 9.6% of vehicle sales in February 2024. This is up from 6.8% the year before. At the same time, the federal government has made progress on its plans to introduce a New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).
