In 2020, 23,272 ambulance agencies operated across the U.S., with 73% reporting that they serve rural regions. Analysis of data from 41 states in 2021-2022 uncovers a stark reality: 4.5 million individuals inhabit 'ambulance deserts', places where people live more than 25 minutes from an ambulance station. Rural counties were more likely to have ambulance deserts (84%) than urban counties (77%). Notable areas with a high concentration of people living in such deserts include the Appalachian region in the South; challenging mountainous terrain in Western states; coastal areas nationwide; and the rural mountainous areas of Maine, Vermont, Oregon, and Washington.
