However the family business took me in (which is funny as I clearly hated having a briefcase as a school bag) and I truly ❤️ what I do in automotive, which is a job that is almost 100% occupied by a man. The best advice I have for my younger self is the advice my father gave me. - Our business is all about people. Be good to our customers and look after our people, knowing they have to look after their people/families. - Learn about all aspects of the business you are in. Be brilliant at the basics but understand how everything interlinks around your role. - Some of the best decisions you will make will be to say “No” - And of the decisions you say “Yes” to, be sure and get more right than wrong (sounds v basic but when the decisions get bigger and bigger, it really does carry a lot of importance). - Follow your instincts. - Have loads of fun. Reducing pollution through beach clean ups is an important way to protect our beaches and marine life. A bittersweet takeaway - in roughly 2 hours, we managed to collect 10 bags of rubbish! Great that we had this impact, but sad that our beaches are so polluted. Well going into my 6th week in my new role at Great Bear Distribution Ltd. I had a lightbulb moment today, to suggest that not only am I back in the saddle, but the saddle feels like home... Let me set the scene, heading off at 630am for a customer meet at our #Hoddesdon #bonded #drinks #specialist site, when the temperature starts to creep ending at 31.5 degrees centigrade, and all of a sudden my car air con packs in, don't worry all under control, go #retro open windows for a 3 hour drive, all under control. Then the challenges appears when arriving at site, deaf in one ear due to wind noise, and also hay fever kicks in with windows open, okay don't panic, deaf in one ear can be an age thing, and I have hay fever tablets I can take, one down no difference, two down starts to work, but then start to feel sleepy, just before a customer visit, however the show goes on, fast forward home route and same outcome, I love this job, but remember folks a #logistics #sales person is for life not just for #seasonalpeaks, if you want some support to review your current #logistics #process reach out for more info, and whilst I am on a #bekind mood, also big shout out to all those people that bought a cabriolet on the basis that a few days a year you can drive in the UK with the top down, I feel your pain, with the windows in my car fully open, I can confirm that windscreen wash stings the eyes and tastes funny from the car in front.😁 . I have had my fair share of mechanics and car salesmen taking advantage of my car knowledge. I've bought two lemons, spent tens of thousands in repairs, and had horrifying experiences behind the wheel of dangerous cars. If you're a woman, you probably know the experience of being chuckled at when trying to explain your budget or the issues you're having (if you haven't, I am so glad for you). This has given me insane distrust of these establishments. My last mechanic and I were on a first name basis, joked I was the piggy bank sending his daughter to college, knew his coffee order and what next venture he was saving for. I hope this was just because he didn't know fully how to work on a Subaru-- but he overlooked a bearing grinding into my front left axel for over a year, which threw off my entire alignment and resulted in a small car fire when my next mechanic took it for a spin. My new mechanic and I are on a first name basis, I know his lunch order, he cheers me on in my professional ventures. I like him just as much as the last mechanic. One of his apprentices accidentally dropped a spark plug in my engine, destroying it after turning the car over. The shop replaced my engine for free, owned up to the mistake and did $12k of free repairs. I will never go back to my last mechanic. My current one told the truth and made it right. Everyone makes mistakes, but building a long term relationship means making things right. Making them whole. That's how I was won over. Do honest business. It builds more loyalty than perfection (even though that's absolutely what you should shoot for)! This is Jason Hinton. He joined us 6 months ago as a forklift truck driver loading our pallet lorries in Highbridge ready for their deliveries. Hungry to learn, Jason quickly demonstrated a desire to get involved with the planning of our deliveries. Today, that's exactly what he does! Below he tells us about his journey. What does a typical day look like for you? I start by scanning all inbound trunks (these are the lorries that bring the pallets from the pallet hubs ready to be sorted and delivered). Then I finalise the deliveries that are due out on that day and start loading the vehicles. After this, I allocate 2nd, and sometimes 3rd, runs for the drivers. Sometimes I also get involved in organising collections, and I deal with any inter-depot phone calls. Then I usually do a final bay check before heading home. Why do you enjoy working at Gregory Group? I've always had a desire to work towards a higher position, but up until now, I haven't had the opportunity to take the next step. At Gregory Group, I saw an opportunity and felt supported enough to give it a go. I really enjoy leaving work knowing we have a 100% delivery rate (or as close as possible to achieving this). Knowing I have a strong connection to that success due to my planning gives me a sense of achievement. What advice would you give to someone considering this role as a career? Be open-minded and remember it's transport - if something doesn't go wrong during the day, you've been very lucky! There are so many factors that can impact deliveries; it's important not to get disheartened. Enjoy the victories, learn from the defeats, and keep going! What advice would you give to someone wishing to move up the career ladder at Gregory Group? If you see an opportunity that suits your skillset, grab the bull by the horns. Demonstrate what you can do, both in your role and for the wider team, and you will be noticed. For me, doors I thought would never open have done.
