In the latest Economic Survey, a shining example of sustainable growth caught my eye: the innovative water conservation efforts in Navanagar, Gujarat. Faced with declining water levels and unsustainable salt levels in the groundwater, the local community, with support from the Water Resource Department and the GUJARAT GREEN REVOLUTION COMPANY LTD. Company, took proactive steps to rejuvenate their village pond. Here's how they did it: ▶Connecting the Pond to Guhai Dam: Ensuring a reliable water source. ▶Deepening the Pond and Building a Sump: Enhancing water storage capacity. ▶Installing Water Lifting Facilities: Improving water accessibility. ▶Introducing Piped Water System and Drip Irrigation: Boosting crop diversity and productivity while reducing water and power usage. 🌟 Mera Pani Meri Virasat (MPMV) Scheme 🌟 We at GVF are proud to announce the successful completion and submission of our comprehensive evaluation of the Mera Pani Meri Virasat (MPMV) Scheme to the Haryana Institute of Public Administration (HIPA). Launched in Kharif 2020, this forward-thinking initiative aims to promote water conservation by encouraging farmers to shift from water-intensive paddy cultivation to less water-consuming crops. 🚜 Key Outcomes: Objective: Enhance soil health and promote sustainable agriculture. Support: ₹77,000 per acre provided to farmers for adopting alternative crops. Impact: Saved approximately 618 million cubic meters (MCM) of water over three years. Coverage: Benefitted over 1,08,000 farmers across eight paddy-rich blocks. 📊 Yearly Impact: Kharif 2020: 63,743 acres diversified, 226 MCM water saved. Kharif 2021: 51,896 acres diversified, 184 MCM water saved. Kharif 2022: 58,525 acres diversified, 208 MCM water saved. Kharif 2023 Target: 1,20,000 acres diversified, 425 MCM water saving (target). Community led Change In the village of Navanagar in Gujarat, farmers were grappling with a dire situation: declining water levels had led to dangerously high salt levels in the groundwater, making agriculture increasingly unprofitable. The community faced a stark reality where traditional farming methods were no longer viable, threatening their livelihoods and food security. Recognizing the gravity of the problem, the farmers decided to take action. They sought help from the Water Resource Department and the Gujarat Green Revolution Company, aiming to rejuvenate their local water sources. The village pond, which had long been a crucial water reservoir, needed a significant overhaul. With the guidance and support of these public bodies, the farmers embarked on an ambitious project to connect the pond to the nearby Guhai Dam. The transformation began with deepening the pond to increase its capacity. They constructed a sump for efficient water storage and installed facilities to lift water, ensuring a steady supply. This wasn't a small feat, as the farmers bore the financial burden themselves, demonstrating their commitment and determination. In addition to these infrastructure improvements, the community introduced a piped water system, which was a game-changer for local irrigation practices. They also adopted drip irrigation, a method that conserves water by delivering it directly to the plant roots. This switch not only reduced water and power usage but also significantly increased crop diversity and productivity. As a result, Navanagar saw a remarkable turnaround. Crops thrived, water resources were managed sustainably, and the local economy improved. Embracing Direct Sowing of Rice: A Sustainable Approach for Punjab's Agriculture Today, I had the privilege of joining a groundbreaking demonstration on Direct Sowing of Rice (DSR) in Pandori Village, Mehal Kalan Block, Barnala District. This initiative, part of the PRANA project (Promoting Regenerative Agriculture and Non-Burn Agriculture), is spearheaded by The Nature Conservancy (TNC). As a Field Operations Officer at TNC, I am excited to share the immense benefits of DSR, particularly its impact on groundwater conservation and methane emission reduction, which are critical for the sustainability of agriculture in Punjab.  Benefits of Direct Sowing of Rice (DSR) for Groundwater Depletion and Methane Gas Reduction 1. Groundwater Conservation:   - Reduced Water Usage: Traditional rice cultivation is heavily water-intensive, requiring fields to be continuously flooded. DSR significantly reduces water consumption by up to 30-40%, as it involves sowing seeds directly into the field without the need for puddling.   - Enhanced Groundwater Recharge: By maintaining moist fields instead of flooded ones, DSR allows for better infiltration of rainwater, promoting natural groundwater recharge. This practice is crucial for combating the severe groundwater depletion faced by Punjab. 2. Reduction in Methane Emissions:   - Lower Methane Production: Conventional flooded rice fields are major sources of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The Wadi model presents a sustainable solution that makes farming profitable even on small plots. Wadi is developed as a 1 acre mini orchard with around 100 fruit trees of guava, gooseberry (amla) or other varieties appropriate to the region. The multitiered cropping pattern ensures nutritional security of the households by the provisioning of cereals, pulses, vegetables and fruits. With water reservoirs dwindling to a mere 55% capacity in Vellore, Ranipet, Thirupathur, and Tiruvannamalai, the agricultural landscape is witnessing a remarkable evolution. As temperatures soar to 44°C and water reserves diminish, authorities urge farmers to transition to crops with lower water requirements. The monumental decision to reserve the remaining 55% of water solely for domestic use underscores the critical nature of the situation. The drying up of the vital Palar River further accentuates the urgency for change. To combat water scarcity, the Tamil Nadu agriculture department is championing a shift towards cultivating crops such as maise, ragi, groundnuts, wheat, and pulses like green gram and urad. These resilient crops not only demand less water but also promise higher returns, steering farmers away from water-intensive crops like sugarcane, paddy, and banana. While the transition poses challenges, farmers like K Ramaswamy in Tiruppatur cautiously embrace this new paradigm. Growing up in a drought-prone region of Maharashtra, Abhijit Sathe felt compelled to address water conservation issues. Thus, he established JalSevak, a company focused on installing greywater recycling systems in both residential and commercial properties to facilitate efficient water reuse. Abhijit's upbringing in an area plagued by water scarcity fueled his passion for water recycling. In India, approximately 31 billion liters of greywater are generated daily, presenting a significant opportunity for conservation. Greywater, originating from non-toilet sources like sinks and showers, remains largely underutilized, with only 5 percent being recycled. Recognizing this gap, Abhijit left his engineering career to introduce innovative solutions. JalSevak's recycling system employs a six-step process to convert greywater for non-potable purposes such as irrigation and toilet flushing, conserving up to 40 percent of freshwater. With installations spanning 12 cities nationwide, Abhijit's cost-effective system offers a sustainable alternative to conventional methods. JalSevak processes 1.25 lakh liters of greywater daily, making a substantial impact on water conservation efforts.
