Each year, 1 in 4 people die worldwide from conditions caused by thrombosis. Thrombosis is often preventable if you know what to be aware of. #worldminoritydonorawarenessday National Minority Donor Awareness Day is an annual observance held on August 1st to highlight the critical need for increased organ, eye, and tissue donations from minority populations. Minorities in the United States, including African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Asian Americans, and Native Americans, face disproportionately higher rates of chronic illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, and kidney disease - conditions that can lead to organ failure. However, these groups are underrepresented on transplant waiting lists. National Minority Donor Awareness Day aims to educate minority communities about the donation process, address cultural barriers, and encourage more individuals from diverse backgrounds to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors. By increasing the pool of minority donors, this observance strives to save and improve the lives of those awaiting life-saving transplants.

🩸 Did you know that nearly half of post-Millennials are from diverse communities, yet a significant portion of blood donations today comes from those over 50? How can we ensure a sustainable blood supply for the future? Patients with conditions like Sickle Cell disease and Thalassemia require specially matched blood, often from donors of similar ethnic backgrounds. That’s why we’re advocating for a new pilot program to provide grant funding for blood centers to reach out to young and diverse donors. This will help diversify the donor base and ensure all patients can get the blood transfusions they need when they need them. On June 14th of each year, World Blood Donor Day is observed globally. This unique day serves as a way to honour those who donate their blood freely in order to aid others and to raise awareness of the critical need of having an adequate supply of safe blood on hand for patients in need. Karl Landsteiner, the man who discovered the ABO blood type system and was awarded a Nobel Prize for it, was born on June 14 as well. Donating blood is essential for extending and improving the lives of those with life-threatening illnesses. They assist with complex medical treatments as well. Goals of World Blood Donor Day include: 1. Remind everyone that blood donations are needed all year round. 2. Promote blood donation by educating local populations about its significance and inspiring others to give. 3. Encourage youth to begin giving blood and encourage their peers to follow suit. 4. Express gratitude to all blood donors and raise awareness of the importance of regular blood donations. 5. Encourage young people to donate blood in order to help everyone's health. Up to three lives can be saved by one donation of blood. Let's raise awareness of the value of blood donation. When we work together, we can change a lot.
