Recently Retired Vice President, Commercial Real Estate at HSBC+RBC. Values driven executive in banking, finance, and real estate. Communicator; Connector; Trusted advisor; Award-winning mentor.

After 26 years, I’m hanging ‘em up to retire from HSBC (and RBC). Even HSBC retired from HSBC! My decision isn’t complicated. The time is right to write my next pages, energized to pursue my passions and explore more. Work can be endless, but time is limited. We shouldn’t be lulled into waiting too long to pursue new opportunities and challenges. It's time for better professional/ personal balance. What’s most fulfilling over a 37 year career is rooted in people: relationships with colleagues, clients, and others across a market ecosystem. So many moments & friendships will always be with me. Two roles stand out: First, Manager of HSBC Langley branch (2000-2004) which made me a better leader. Some special colleagues reinforced that trust, integrity, and a long-term outlook matter most in building rewarding relationships. And my leadership role of HSBC’s CRE finance business - my capstone and how I define my career. We’ve built an incredible business, with a team and client list envied by the competition, an entrepreneurial mindset, and special culture we all cherish. This diverse team has unmatched talent which made it the top CRE franchise. I’m especially proud of my teammates for their professionalism & resilience during the RBC transition. An extraordinary group that the entire market respects for their deal-making focus, sector expertise, and speed to approval: our X-factor and true differentiator. There are too many folks to acknowledge here, but they all know who they are. My career axioms: []one’s boardroom table values & kitchen table values should match []nurture your clients, your team, your integrity []the client is #1, but a trusted advisor has equal voice []take a long-term view; challenge any short-termism []use political capital for your team, not yourself []compassionate directness, vulnerability, and empathy build trust and create followership []influence is more powerful than authority []be a mentor and seek reverse mentoring []embrace this powerful phrase: “I’m sorry” []self-awareness is critical- own your insecurities. May all your deals receive smooth/rapid credit, rezoning, and permitting approvals. Dale Telfer

Dale you were the one to take a chance on a young unknown banker working in Saskatoon and bring to the coast. I’m very thankful for you going to bat for me. Good luck with the next stage of your journey, I am eternally grateful.

Dale: We will miss you! You have been a fantastic partner and advocate for Conwest over the past many years. You got us! You got what do! You got how we do it! And most importantly you had faith in us. You were a HUGE part of our success. I can't wait to see what you do next. I know you'll appreciate this quote from Seneca... "One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood." ben

Congrats Dale ! It is exceptional to achieve a benchmark professional status like where you stand. Similar to an army of your well wishing colleagues and peers in RE Banking Industry, I also have a fond memory of collaborating with you and your team. Those nasty economy days in 2008 required both expertise and finesse for successful financing projects . Myself and my then development employer/client were able to pull it off only with your collaboration, support  and guideline….Thank you again! I wish you the best in your gracefully slower days ahead. Hamid Ebrahimi

Congrats Dale. Wishing you all the best in your next chapter. You’ve been a tough competitor and an amazing syndicate partner over the years. It was a special treat to have you as a colleague for a brief moment too. Thanks for being willing to share your wisdom with me, those many times, when I needed it.

Congratulations Dale Telfer you have achieved many milestones! It was an honour to work alongside you during your volunteer tenure on the Banks Committee for BC Children’s Hospital Foundations’s Miracle Weekend Cabinet! Thank you for your leadership and dedication to give back to the community and ralling the financial institutions to collectively raise funds for BC’s kids during your time at HSBC! All the best to you in your next adventure!
