This CRO worked at a large bank for over 10 years!  But Red Tape and Bureaucracy limited his growth Here’s how joining a smaller bank changed his career: Last year, I met a talented chief risk officer who was feeling unfulfilled. After 10 years at a major bank, he had hit a career plateau. His ideas were often lost in bureaucratic processes. Intense competition made it hard for him to stand out. Top executives rarely noticed his contributions. As time went on, his work became repetitive. And he felt increasingly disconnected from the business. We went for a coffee and had a long chat, I suggested considering a change of scenery. I found him a CRO position at a smaller, growth-oriented bank. He said joining a smaller bank was never something he considered, Especially after being at such a large institution for so many years. But he took a leap of faith and decided to make the move. Here's what happened next… In his new role, he very quickly gained more visibility and his hard work was recognised. Executives actively sought out and valued his input. With less red tape, he could implement ideas more quickly. A couple of months later, I reached out to see how he was adjusting. His response? "Nick, I wish I'd considered this change years ago." A gentle reminder for seasoned professionals: Bigger isn't always better. Sometimes, a strategic step to a smaller institution can reignite your career and passion.

I’m coming up to nearly 3 months into my current role & haven’t done a reflection post for a while (gives you an idea of how busy I’ve been!). Having gained huge experience with all things Blue/Risk within Barclays since starting this role, the key takeaways that I have on reflection from progress so far are: - always be on the front foot with everything that you do - being organised with your proactivity can make a huge difference in making quality progress & at speed With the 2 above points, of course there are always outside factors that you can’t control. However, you can control & achieve a lot more than you realise. I have found these 2 aspects as golden rules to help me progress forwards with my work in a relatively short period of time. Level 17 Unlocked at HSBC… I am “sixteen, going on seventeen” … not quite the number you’d expect on my playlist? But it is and recently, I find myself humming this tune often. Here’s why. Sixteen years ago, I wasn't quite "sixteen going on seventeen," but I was certainly filled with youthful enthusiasm as I began my journey at #HSBC. Sixteen years later, I'm proud to say I've grown significantly, both personally and professionally, thanks to the incredible opportunities #HSBC has provided. Today marks the start of my 17th year. Reflecting on my journey at #HSBC, I can't help but recall my first day, the nerves of my first sales call, and yet, the warmth that enveloped me, making this corporate giant feel like a second home. It's clichéd, but the phrase 'home away from home' truly applies here, evident in the years I've spent here. The organization has fostered my steady professional growth, while also igniting an insatiable hunger for continuous learning and advancement – a hallmark, I believe, of any ambitious professional. I especially recall some pivotal moments where my line management had stood out for me and entrusted me with a challenging role. I seized these opportunities, feeling honoured to have their faith and support. While they've moved on to new horizons, leaving me to navigate my path solo, I'm grateful for the wisdom gained.
