I wholeheartedly agree with the arguments made by the Alliance of European Car Dealers and Repairers (AECDR) regarding the European Parliament's rejection of the Carbon Correction Factor. This decision marks a significant setback in the transition to climate-neutral transportation. The flexibility offered by open-technology solutions is crucial for achieving CO2 reduction targets in a balanced manner, taking into account economic and social needs. Moreover, excluding renewable fuels from the equation is a serious flaw that undermines the effectiveness of decarbonisation measures. Cary Group’s targets for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have now been verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), as aligned with the latest climate science and consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement.   “We are very pleased that our emission reduction targets have now been validated by SBTi, and we look forward to continuing to offer our customers smarter solutions for sustainable car care. With a strong focus on circularity and repairing instead of replacing windshields, when possible, our journey now accelerates. Our climate impact will continue to reduce by increasing the share of renewable energy, operate with sustainable transportation, and work towards a sustainable supply chain”, says Anders Jensen, CEO of Cary Group. With the new targets Cary Group has committed to reduce CO2e emissions from scope 1 & 2 by 42% in line with the 1.5°C scenario from 2022 to 2030. For Scope 3, emissions should be reduced in relation to gross profit by 52% by 2030, compared to the base year 2022. We are proud to announce our Tier 3 certification for the CO2 Performance Ladder! By reducing carbon emissions within our organization and projects, and participating in sector initiatives, we aim to set an industry example. Starting at the base of the Ladder, we gained insights into our energy consumption and its resulting emissions. After enhancing the energy efficiency of our office and company cars, vessel fuel consumption now accounts for 99.5% of our total CO2 emissions. Our next step was to research various measures to reduce these emissions. We partnered with FincoEnergies, who supply Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) blends, capable of cutting CO2 emissions by up to 89% compared to fossil fuels. After launching our mission in 2022 with HVO6 (6% HVO), we implemented HVO30 fleet-wide this January, achieving a 28% CO2 reduction. More than half of the 7.3 billion tons of global CO2 emissions generated by the transport sector are in hard-to-abate applications, such as aircraft, ships, trucks, and buses. This fact is driving the rapid development of policies, accelerated technology adoption, and innovative business models around low-carbon alternative fuels. These non-traditional energy sources can replace or supplement fossil fuels. Thanks to their mature sustainability certification standards, the EU and US currently lead alternative fuel ecosystems. This interesting article by ADL highlights the following challenges faced by the SEA region in Alternative Fuel Transition for the Transportation Sector- Lack of Certification Standards: The absence of standards for certifying the sustainability of new alternative fuels, hinders investment and customer adoption. Limited Incentives and Infrastructure: As SEA governments haven't created strong incentives for alternative fuel production, the region lacks the necessary infrastructure like renewable energy grids. High Production Costs: The cost of producing alternative fuels in SEA is high due to a lack of renewable power sources and specialized facilities. To tackle these challenges the governments and related ministries must collaborate with international bodies to design and implement regional certification standards, create strong regulatory frameworks and incentives to encourage alternative fuel production and use and replicate successful infrastructure development from other regions to support the alternative fuel supply chain.
