It’s fun to be surprised with information that challenges your assumptions! So many older professionals consider the Gen Z young people to lack a work ethic, or to be lacking in personal responsibility. I found out yesterday that assumption isn’t necessarily on the mark. (At least not on our campus.) I host a monthly discussion group called Blue Collar Mindfulness here for our students, faculty & staff. We have open, honest conversations about how to have a happier, more successful, less stressful life. Yesterday at lunchtime, I had a dozen or so students attend and we had fun trading thoughts & ideas for almost an hour. Some takeaways: the consensus is that, yes, people are stressed, but they are actively engaged in techniques and behaviors aimed at relieving that stress. Students mentioned meditation, faith, self reflection, and support from their friends as ways they have been able to work on themselves. It was eye opening and refreshing to hear these young people open up and share some very mature perspectives! As we head into Thanksgiving 2023, I continue to be so grateful for our students at Rosedale Technical College. They continue to inspire and surprise me. I’m so thankful for my job, my coworkers, and all the support we get from employers and the community.
