Quiet quitting, a disengaged workforce. I see all sorts of hypotheses as to why these trends are happening. Yet I don't see anyone talking about this from the rootiest root cause: The energy on the planet is changing. If you're in a skin suit on Earth, it's impacting you. The purpose of this energy is to wake each of us up from the inside. We’re not born a blank slate that needs education and training to mold us into productive citizens. We're born with unique skills and talents to give the world. Most of us express those as kids, until we're talked out of them by someone telling us things like "you can't make money doing that" or "when you work in money you'll always have it." So, we put on a mask, justify our decisions as "smart" or "stable," and ignore our inner calling. Yet that inner calling doesn't go away. It simmers under the surface, ready for when we're brave enough to take the mask down and let it back into our lives. For many, your time is up. It's time to drop the mask and remember what you came here to do and how you came to impact the world. How will you know if this is you? 👉🏽 You're a high performer yet you still never feel good enough. 👉🏽 You paste on a smile and pretend you care about the company's mission, when something about it feels off to you. 👉🏽 Other things - freedom, impact, peace- are starting to be more important than money or prestige. And the most telling of all: 👉🏽 You have a subtle feeling that you're here for something else. Something bigger. Something more. I know exactly how you feel. I once worked at a great (on paper) job and still felt uncomfortable. I also know how to shift gears, let the mask down, and re-ignite your inner calling. By 2025 Gen Z will make up 27% of global employees. A good chunk of them entered the workforce in a post-COVID era with flexible working and a heightened focus on work-life balance. They were behind the “quiet quitting” trend and are refreshingly vocal about what they expect from an employer. As the PR industry welcomes the next generation of talent, PR agencies need to understand what Gen Z wants to attract (and retain) them as employees. Here are 4 things I've learnt from our conversations with Gen Z talent: 1. They see their job as a 50/50 give-and-take. Gen Z sees work as a trade-off. They’ll give you their time, energy and effort as long as you give them an equal amount in return. They are happy to do overtime as long as you provide true flexibility. They don’t expect everything to always be in balance, sometimes the time and effort pendulum will swing towards the employee but they’ll certainly expect it to swing back to the employer to create equilibrium. 2. Outcomes-focused vs presenteeism This generation wants the freedom to do their job without the old-school rules. They’ll achieve the task at hand and stick to the general flow of the work environment but won’t suffer things like staying late for the sake of optics. They’ll also become quickly disengaged within an environment that promotes based on favouritism and workplace political games. 3. Mental health and work-life balance is paramount Gen Z are more comfortable in sharing when they feel stretched, overwhelmed and burnt out. An employer that shows how they proactively support team members with mental health initiatives and encourages a give-and-take work-life balance will attract the best Gen Z talent. 4. Purpose + Profit Being B Corp certified or a Clean Creatives pledger won't necessarily win you talent, but it will tip the scales in your favour. This generation is engaged by businesses that have a purpose beyond profit, and take action to prove it.
