Why do we have health awareness months? This question is one that doesn't readily come to mind but still requires an answer. Here's an illustration. If you've come across a motion sensor street light, you would know that when you come within a certain distance, the light shines brighter, therefore illuminating your steps as you walk. That's the same thing awareness months do, it helps is shine the spotlight on a particular medical condition for that period of time. During that month, there are resources related to that particular condition, to help reduce stigma and increase your knowledge. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and this prevalent medical condition has our spotlight for this month. What should you know about cervical cancer? How widespread is it? In honor of PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome Awareness Month in May, we want to raise awareness about the condition and resources for those impacted. PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (PHTS) is a group of disorders caused by mutations in the PTEN gene. It includes Cowden syndrome (CS), Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba syndrome (BRRS), and sometimes Proteus syndrome. These conditions lead to the growth of benign tumors and increase the risk of certain cancers. Symptoms vary, but common signs include multiple hamartomas in various organs, an increased risk of breast, thyroid, and colorectal cancers, and distinctive features like macrocephaly and lipomas. Early diagnosis and regular medical check-ups are essential for managing PHTS and reducing cancer risks. Through the review of 138,959 articles, Genomenon has identified and categorized 17.6k variants within the PTEN gene. According to the WHO, more than 1.6 million people worldwide die each year from alcohol-related diseases, including 474,000 deaths from cardiovascular diseases and 401,000 from cancer. Wistar scientists are studying the link between alcohol consumption and cancer, including how cancer cells use nutrients from alcohol to fuel their growth and the role of acetate, a compound that forms when the body metabolizes alcohol. The goal is to understand how alcohol contributes to cancer, find treatments, and learn how people can reduce their risk.
